You can see a chica working a casa one night wanting 2500 pesos and the next night she will be working the street wanting 1500 pesos. I doubt the police will harass the street walkers on the Malecon. More likely the police will be there to harass people driving new cars at night. I never felt unsafe on the Malecon. 305 is allowed to stay open late after the curfew, a clear violation of the law. I would guess the police chief is getting a nice cash stipend, from the owners of some casas (some casas will have to charge more as way to make up the money they have to pay the police and/or other government officials). Casa 305 is on the same street, two blocks away from the main PLD party headquarters (the ruling political party in Dom Rep).

There is really only one area on the Malecon where the streetwalkers congregate, near the Isla gas station, commercial area. At night, only the gas station is open there. The police will drive down the Malecon and then turn onto Independencia, to do a loop. They will pass many street walkers on Independencia, they will pass Casa 305 and see that it is open after curfew. The police will be looking for new cars to stop to try and get money from the drivers, the police are not looking for criminal activity.

To me the police driving around at night in Santo Domingo, are the thieves.

Jo, your all collaborating what I was being told. According to the conversations, The goverment wants the action pushed into Casa and will tolerate a few minor violations to clean up the streets as long as health and pandaring laws are enfoced. They want to clean up the image so they may go after more tourist ship traffic.

Why is all this of interest to me? Well, I have some friends that are thinking of investing. The slow rumer in the caribbian is that Obama/U.S.A. are leaning to easing travel and trade restrictions with Cuba in the next two years. The evident implications is that the inclusion of Cuba as a Port of Call makes several caribbian islands more attractive for cruise ships travel. If you look at most routes, the illogical lat stop before coming back to USA/FLL/MIA is to Mexico.

Somebody tell me I am wrong. Information is Key and I don't mind being told im crazy...

Aurora the little bar behind Jaragua hotel is a thing of the past along with all the other little stores in that section. Aurora was always hit and miss but at $RD 1800 take out it was the cheapest casa in Gazcue. All the buildings were demolished and I don't have a clue what will replace the shops. If you look at the photo of Aurora No Mas to the extreme right you will see Manolos Restaurant. The other Aurora No Mas photo is a pile of lumber that remains from the demolition. I don't remember everything that was there, but there was Aurora, Dominican comedor, a seamtress shop, and I think there was also a small call center.

Jaragua Hotel Casino has opened it's new casino entrance on Avenida George Washington. You can still enter the casino via the hotel lobby.

The plaza on the malecon appears to have something going on every weekend. I know my last few trips on Saturday night there was some type of free show.

I also noticed a few extra police vehicles parked on the malecon today. I don't know if they are there because of the increased police force mentioned in the news or if they were there today because of this evening's show in the plaza. Then again they could just be getting prepared for when Jaosousa returns. LOL

I feel like a gangsta rapper about the police in Santo Domingo, I remember that one song "F_ck the PO Lice".

The police on the motorcycles have been the ones breaking my balls recently. In the past I would see the police truck type vehicle on the malecon and they never bothered me. When I drive around at night checking out the street walkers, I do a couple of loops, to check out the inventory on the Malecon and on Independencica. The other guys I see doing the same thing are driving new cars. The more driving I do there now, the greater the likelihood I will come across two police on a motorcycle.

Further down on the Malecon past the Hilton, 20 year old Dominicans park their cars on the Malecon and hang out there at night. I saw the Policia Nacional breaking balls there as well. If you read the comments section of the articles in Dominican Today, many Dominicans feel the same way, they see the policia nacional as ball breakers out looking for easy money.

What's the best time of day to walk el conde, when do they have to most action? Morning? Noon? Evening? Night?

El Conde is busy throughout the day, mostly normal people walking on El Conde. For working girls, Pacos (now called Grands) at the end of El Conde is the place that will usually have some working girls throughout the day. Other parts of El Conde I saw practically no working girls. Later in the evening most of Zona Colonial resembles a ghost town. Near Plaza de Espana and Atarazana there are people out at night. There is one park in Zona Colonial where gays hang out at night. Off of El Conde on some side streets there are some bars.

The street chicas start showing up on Avenida Independencia, near Avenida Pasteur around 7pm or around the time when the sun goes down.

Lapsus is still there. Everything from Lapsus's parking lot to the corner is gone. It was weird to walk up and do a double take since I was just there about a month ago. It will be interesting to see what will be built there. Since Manolos did the remodel job on the old restaurant that used to be there a different clientel can now be found in the area.

Thanks for the response. I was just asking about action in general, because I'm taking two of my friends with me for their first time to SD and didn't want to go there and it's dead. My first time, I was blown away at how busy it was and wanted them to experience to same. I'll probably arrive around 1:00 pm and take them to check out El Conde and the Colonial Zone, then after that hit the casas! We'll only be there for two days so I want do as much as I can b4 we head up north.

Baby Dolls should be open at 1pm, it is on the Malecon near to the Zona Colonial. Sky House on Pasteur should be open at 1pm. If you go to a casa early, you will most likely see chicas with a hair net on and wearing pajama type clothes, usually sexy pajama type clothes. I am not sure when bar 360 opens in zona colonial.

GBP is a small fun place with good prices. GBP, from what I have been told doesn't stay open late. I don't know what time the new place, Bar 305 opens, it is on Avenida Independencia across from Villa Hernanos restaurant near Avenida Pasteur.

There is a happy ending massage place that is open during the day on Calle Cervantes up the block from Ave. Independencia, next door to the supermarket.

You can start off in Pacos (Grands) have a few beers there, check out the scene, you can then walk south to the malecon to visit Baby Dolls, then you can walk along the malecon to Pasteur, turn right and visit sky house (maybe girl's house will be open). From Sky House and Girls House you can walk to bar 305, then if you want you can walk to the happy ending massage place. From there you can take a taxi to GBP (walking in the heat is not for everyone, it is safe walking around during the day, plenty of taxis around, 150-200 pesos).

Casa Theresa opened at 7pm on a Sunday, maybe they open earlier other days. Casa de Modelos, not sure when they open. Boricua Online has pinned a place at 56 Pasteur (about two blocks north of Ave. Independencia), 1000 pesos, I have not been to that place.

If you are flying into Santo Domingo that day, you could ask the cab driver to stop at Dreams Massage, near the horse racing track, it is off the highway when heading from the airport to Santo Domingo (only problem would be worrying about your luggage in the taxi). There is another place that has been mentioned, that is north of the ramp from the airport to the highway.

Getting stopped by motorcycle cops in Santo Domingo just because I am a white guy driving a new car, I can relate to how some guys feel here in the States.

I haven't heard anything about health cards for chicas in casas, yet. My parents went on a cruise a few years ago and their ship stopped in La Romana. From what I have seen mostly cruise ships with Europeans are stopping in Santo Domingo. With the price of fuel likely to go higher in the future, the cruise companies will look for ways to shorten the distance of travel of their ships. San Juan, Santo Domingo are closer to the US.

Opening up travel to Cuba, I doubt it in my lifetime. The politics regarding Cuba is tied to the politics of Florida. Getting the electoral college votes of Florida is important to winning a presidential election, I doubt anyone will greatly mess with the Cuba policy as it now stands, with the possibility of losing Florida.

That is a big property across from Mystik Hotel, with the vacant house and the crumbling wall around it. Further down the street on Avenida Pasteur, next door to the V Centannario Hotel, there was a vacant house. It was demolished recently and I was told the new owner will be putting up a small hotel.
