Tourist arrivals are up, year over year, at least up through 2013. The numbers for 2014 aren't in yet. However, many other sources claim that, although gross tourist numbers are up, business in the bars is down. It's very hard to obtain and retain staff. Fewer girls = fewer customers. But you seem to have some inside knowledge, so please be kind enough to share. Where are these hordes of sex tourists going, whose services are they using?

Oh, and $100+ short times is hardly "more bang for your buck" compared to many places.

More Asians and sub-continentals, but fewer Westerners. The bars are empty compared to 10 years ago and there are fewer and fewer gals in the trade each year. Any long term resident will tell you that. The FL scene is sad compared to 10 years ago when you could not walk 10 meters down lower Suk without being propositioned by a cute gal. Now it is mainly uglies and folks from a rather undesirable demographic. Few seem to care? Everyone I know is very bummed about the scene's decline. I don't know a resident that is positive about it. I get into BKK around 11 am. The lines at immigration was very small. I only had to wait behind 10 people compared to anytime I have been here before when the line was at least 100 people which was odd to me. The small line did not matter. Hong Kong and South Korea were once viable and thriving sex destinations (before the internet and cheap air travel so this was not widely publicized and there were no hordes of working class foreigners visiting).

When I moved to Thailand, I also thought the sex scene would not change dramatically for at least a 2-3 decades, but it shifted dramatically in under 10 years. It's difficult to see it coming, and even difficult to figure out it's happening if you live here or visit often (like a frog being slowly boiled), but obvious in retrospect.

From what I've seen, sex scene in Thailand (especially the freelancer scene) has gone downhill rapidly around 2009/10, and seems to be in terminal decline. Before that there was decline for some years, but slower paced.

Back in the day (prior to 2009), the scene would easily pull in guys who were averse to prostitution, and came here without thoughts of a naughty holiday. One could effortlessly find someone for an hour, night, week. And often the overall experience was so great that quite a few guys would marry the 1st (or 10th, same thing!) Thai hooker they met (even younger guys did this occasionally).

These days the scene still looks large to a first-time visitor (especially given that it's in plain view and not hidden away like in most other countries), but it's populated by the remnants and dregs, as Goatscrot said, girls obviously too lazy or too stupid to do other work. Or having been hookers for way too long to switch to anything else. It's fair to admit Thai hookers (in the Farang scene) are still more pleasant and service minded than in most other countries (e. G. Vietnam, China), but that's a low bar to clear. And don't care to keep it up for long.

It would be interesting to find statistics on Western sex tourist arrivals (as opposed to general tourist arrivals), and also on the number of marriages between Farang and Thai bargirls. They guys who date or marry what's left on the hooker scene in 2014 must be both desperate and nearly blind (whereas before they were just temporarily blindsided by being treated unexpectedly well).

The sex scene oriented towards Thai customers is clearly on the decline as well, at least the portions I'm familiar with (on the lower end, mostly).
