Make no mistake it's there though behind the scant fences often in inconspicuous looking houses or in goldmining towns. There is even a small one or two blocks of street action on Hoogestraat in Paramaribo but from what I could see you really wouldn't want to go there. The only time I asked my taxi driver to pass through Paramaribo SW area I saw mostly ugly hoes acting loco and bunch of dudes that by their appearance would offer you fake drugs of your choice. Then again maybe that's what you're looking for. If it is, then it sure is there.

I asked my taxi driver to give me a tour on my first day there which was Friday afternoon around 3-5 pm. Couple of notes here for those on their first visit to Suriname.

First, it's JaVanese, not JaPanese! It's very easy to get confused about this as I initially was, especially with the way they pronounce it. It's Javanese as in from Indonesia. They don't look Japanese and don't act Japanese. Local GDPs of Japanese descent you'd be more apt to find in Brazil, Argentina, or Peru. In Suriname it's Javanese.

The average gold-mining location is self-sufficient in many ways. It houses its own accommodation, its own supermarket, and its own brothel often full of Brazilian girls but not only.

The goldmine that I visited was couple of hours away from Paramaribo and its brothel consisted largely (as I was told) of Dominican girls. I didn't however get a chance to verify that part because first Dominican girl who met me was friendly English speaking one that upon further examination ended up being the best looking there as well so I ended up stayed with her.
