Budget traveling in Davao...
Last night, coming back from dinner, I decided I needed some small stuff and stopped in at a local convenience store on Circumferential Road. I noticed a sign for "Ruby's Pension" right next to the store and, as I had never seen the place before, decided to check it out. Apparently, it's been there for four years but I had just never noticed.
The place is small, with only 7 rooms and they're booked well in advance. It's immaculate and attractive, with a rate of Php1000 a night (breakfast included), which makes Galleria or Las Casitas a better deal for the short-stay travelers. However, if you book for at least two weeks, the rate drops to Php600 and for that amount, it's a bargain. Fully air conditioned with cable TV and a small kitchenette in each room, it's a decent alternative to the aforementioned and to Red Knight Garden. It's only 5 minutes by taxi from the very center of the action. While my wife checked the place out, I was joking with the three young women managing the pension, all of whom told me they are "available." I have no idea if this means they're available for fun and games or they're looking for a foreign boyfriend. One of them was extremely cute.
This place is probably virtually unknown to foreigners and probably caters to a local clientèle, but it's surely worth a look for those thinking of coming here for a couple of weeks or longer. It's about 10 meters from Circumferential Road, which is plied by taxis 24/7 so getting local transport would not be an issue.
Still on the low cost theme, I got a couple of emails recently from guys wanting accommodation for Php300-500 a night. To my surprise, my wife found a couple of places right in the neighborhood of Davao Doctors Hospital, offering rooms with private baths for Php250. They have no a/c, but they do have fans and they're clean, or at least, they appear to be clean. I never realized that they existed, but apparently, they're popular with Davao Doc students who probably double up in the rooms, so who knows? It could be that if you stay in one of these places you wouldn't have to look very far for accommodating company.

I don't know no book learnin'
Hey GE,
Thanks for the great tips. Are the campuses spread out, or can you walk from hot area to hot area? I actually have never gone to an internet cafe while in PI mainly because I actually have work to do and usually find a hotel with DSL or wi-fi. That might be the problem-that I always bring some work with me and end up either bailing on the daytime or nightime fun, which makes me in for 2 of the 4 quarters of the game.
I'd love to hit you up on the referrals, but I think after I buy you a beer. That way you will know you're not giving a dirtbag the numbers of personal friends or friends of friends. I'd like to meet some girls that I actually don't want to kick out of my room in the AM, but here's what I'm noticing these days- Yes I want an intelligent, fun "proper" girl, but I also want them to be great in the sack. Being raised in the U.S. I'm used to girls who don't see the two as conflicting characteristics. And it's kept me from dating girls in Korea because when I meet normal girls I frankly don't want to spend a month until they feel comfortable with their clothes off. I also can't go too far off with the P4P fun because of my high visibility. I have maybe hit the RLD here twice. So, how to detect the ones that give all the appearances of being nice girls, but let loose once you get them alone, that's the new detection skill I have to learn. Too much real world static to worry about here in Korea, but essential since I have a time limit in Davao.
So, see you in about a month. Tonight I actually may be hooking up with a 20 year old who was fliriting with me in a University party two weeks ago. I can't go that long without some action so I'll give it a shot, but I'm not optimisitic of the night ending up at my place. Ah to be in Phil!
Book learnin' and the Middle Class Filipina

Ah to be in Phil![/QUOTE]I wouldn't worry too much about the good girl/tiger in bed dichotomy. I don't think it's valid here, at least not to judge from the conversations I hear about from the nurses. All of my wife's friends wanted to know if it's really true that Western guys are bigger and really like foreplay, to which my wife just smiled and said, "much" and "oh boy!"
Based on my own experience here, and what I've observed of DS' experience with "normal" women, it's not that the latter aren't great in bed, it's just that they all want some reassurance that rolling around naked with them is not the only thing in which you're interested. These girls also like nice dinners, people who treat them kindly, and appreciate some respect. I'm out of the game in Davao, but DS is certainly very much in it, and without exception, he treats them well; nice dinners, good wine, pleasant conversations, etc. That's the major secret, and it's not difficult to do if you're with someone you genuinely like.
I think that many middle class Filipinas like Western guys so much is not that they see us as walking ATMs, though some certainly do. Most however, prefer Western guys I think because westerners appear to more genuinely like women as people and are generally more considerate lovers. At least, this is what I've been told.
