Vagabundo, Sperto, et al. If I were to be working in Ipanema, do you have a strong opinion regarding living in Ipanema vs Barra the Tijuca? Obviously, Ipanema would allow me to walk to and from, spend less time on the commute, but also likely be more expensive and less space. I would probably walk or use the bike rental to Jardim Oceanico and take the metro to Ipanema, if I lived in Barra, and might feel some comfort in getting away from it all. FYI, I've stayed in both locations in the past and would feel comfortable in either, all factors aside.

First, the Tuesday morning street fair is just next to the Barra Garden shopping center, near the gas station, where the Riviera condo intersects with Ave das Americas. Ave Olegario Maciel 7 (Na Brasa Colombia) counts as a mall too, as the whole street is a high end shopping district. This is at Metro Jardim Oceanico, and it is near the best terma IMHO in Rio, Perola Negra. PN is Ave de Pepe 400.
Paris Cafe is further down towards Recreio, and further still in that direction is Praia Abrico, and even further past Praia Abrico is Cafe Marambaia, where the best Paella in Rio can be had.
2. Botafogo. Search for places at or near Rua Sao Clemente 114, close to the best sex motel, Panda. Then you can take the metro to centro and take the bus to Solarium, and all the wealthy, upper middle class districts between botafogo and PUC, where you should take Portuguese if you stay long enough. Botafogo is the real, upper middle class, but mixed race carioca the gema neighborhood. You should also consider Flamengo, Largo do Machado, and even Catete.
Do not stay in Copa. Copa is dangerous, the water is dirty, basically a toilet bowl. Criminals go to Copa to find victims. Be the bat, not the ball. Most board members have different views about Copa which is kind of times square compared to Barra being Miami.

The bigger point, and the point of this thread is that Senor Anaggie and Senor Mr E were saying that all the Brazilian chow is similar. I'm just saying that there is some really good eating choices near the thing that makes Rio and Brazil unique -- the sex, which is the point of this board, after all.

I take Senor Anaggie's point that there are perhaps even better restaurants, and women, in SP, but at a higher cost, and without the beach / waterfall hiking combinations which make Rio geographically unique. Its a matter of personal taste, like the Copa / Barra debate being whether you prefer Times Square (copa) or Miami and safety (Barra); SP, I know well too, but its just that I prefer actually swimming in the ocean, while also having a sex menu which is completely full from top to bottom tier, all colors, and for that Rio and Barra is optimal, perhaps a little like the Cartagena of the Marquez novels.
And without meaning any disrespect or harm whatsoever, I will suggest that some of those novellas, like Memories of my melancholy working girls by Marquez, might be a good antidote to Brazil Withdrawal Syndrome; I realize that much of what this particular board is is actually just reminiscences by men who are not in Rio, and who can only spend a small percentage of their time in Rio due to their circumstances.
I know this has been said before, but: price does not equal quality. I've been bringing women back to my place instead of going to Termas this trip. The prices can vary a lot, but I've only been seeing the ones who stay at least 2 hours for the price of 1 hour at a terma. Then you have women asking for 800 or 1,000+ BRL for an hour and pricing themselves out of 99% of men. Not sure who they're targeting because locals won't pay those prices and gringos have the luxury of browsing before choosing at termas. Paying 1,000/ HR for someone you haven't seen in real life doesn't make sense. Then some of them refuse a BBBJ and it makes even less sense.
Not all the women I've seen were worth repeating, but I've had great experiences most of the time without having to leave my apartment.
