I started my last trip to Brazil with a 12-day stay in Rio. This was my second time in Rio. For accommodations I had a similar pattern in each city. Staying in Airbnb's most of the time but booking a hotel for a few days near the end, in case I wanted to have a guest over. I expect to be spending more time in Brazil and am playing a longer game now, so in no rush to bring guests to an apartment until I've found the right combination of both. The two apartments I stayed in Rio were OK, clean, big screen TVs, but not as modern or quiet as I like. Neither had amenities like gym or pool. Both in the range $65-$75/ night.

For transportation I used mostly Uber and the 99 ride app. I posted a detailed review of the latter a couple weeks ago and highly recommend getting the 99 ride app as an additional option when in Brazil. I also got a metro card and used the metro a handful of times, mainly for longer rides for example from Copacabana to Centro. Each ride is 7 BRL which is dirt cheap and can save a lot on long distance rides. However, I used Uber /99 most of the time as most rides were 15-30 BRL which is just $3-6 and much more convenient.

Beach and boardwalk scene was good. Went swimming twice, once in Leme / Copa and once in Barra the Tijuca. I had read that the Leme part of Copa beach is less crowded, but on the Sunday I went it was packed. In contrast the Barra beach had much fewer people, which seems typical there. The water was fine but freezing cold. And invigorating. Loved it. I brought minimal belongings to the beach and tipped a beach chair vendor to watch my stuff while I went in the water. I used a waterproof phone pouch and lanyard / clip to keep my phone and a few BRL with me in the water. It worked out well, I had no anxiety about getting valuables stolen, and the vendors appreciated a 20 BRL tip.

I sampled plenty of restaurants. Typical Brazilian dishes with rice, fries, beans and chicken or steak were widely available and the most common meals I had. One standout was Barraca the Chiquita Copacabana which has great dishes from the northeast. The area around the Largo do Machado park / metro in Catete also has a good restaurant and nightlife scene. Places like Pura Chama, Billy The Grill, Gambino, etc.

For garotas I focused on massage places / indies and termas. Back in 2022 the entry was 100, which IIRC covered a drink each for yourself and the girl; the club exit fee to take a girl out was 200, and the girls were asking 500-600 for 1-2 hours. Now in 2025 the entry is still 100 which includes a drink for yourself only, with a limited choice of caipirinha, water, juice or soda. No beer! Reason why I brought it up was not really the issue about security and safety. Instead it was back to my thing regarding the visits to the prives. I was with a wingman for my Asia trip and he isn't just some bloke I met there. He's a long time friend I've known for decades but this was his first international mongering trip. The main concern I had especially if he chooses to come with me to my first Rio trip in the spring is when we tour the prives assuming that their rosters are going to be a lot smaller than the selections we'll see at the termas.

If at the first prive we spot only one doable girl and I take her, my friend might have to just wait in the lobby while I have my session. Although I would encourage him to just move onto the next prive on his own to try his luck there, I think he might be too chicken to do so without me (again due to his limited experience in traveling internationally in countries where English is not the main language).
