[QUOTE=Yellow Fever #2]The bouncers can be a real pain in the ass if you are not white enough and they don't know you. It is not always so but I have seen it happen a few times.
I have seen it at Neptunes.
My recommendation is to go with a caucasian friend the first time you try to enter Neptunes. It may also happen at Makati and Laguna as well. I'd recommend if you don't have a white western friend with you, to find one outside of the bar to 'accompany' you inside. Just explain the situation to someone outside. It easier now to socialize this way as smokers are outside of the bars on the street.
It really unfortunate situation for non-caucasian westerners but there must be a reason for it. These bars are not new, they have been around for decades.
At certain times, non-caucasians will get in but will have to 'pay the cover charge' which at some bars may be 200HKD to enter.
At times when US Navy is in town, the cover charge is enforced for the non-local people but local and regulars are let in for free. It's not fair but if you don't like it go elsewhere.
Even inside of the bars, non-caucasians will have more difficulty with the local service providers, all else being equal.
This is one of the expat locales in Hong Kong, perhaps the best known location. There are other parts of Hong Kong where the discrimination goes the other direction.

My personal experience with Wanchai bouncers as an Asian-American has been positive. Some of the doorman are even friendly, including those at Neptune and Laguna. Of all my years of visiting Wanchai, the only place I was asked to pay a "membership fee" was Fenwicks. All the while, white customers walked straight in without any hassle. Regardless, I don't blame doormen for such actions. They are only carrying out orders from management or owners.
