Those guys that partake in the skanks that roam the streets of El Centro are good candidates for a frontal lobotomy. It's truly horrific in El Centro with all the glue sniffers, drunks, deaf mutes, transvestites, and other freaks! The thought upon arriving in El Centro and seeing the circus there reminds me of a scene from the movie Forrest Gump when Forrest is told to run. The place most definitely should be avoided at all costs!

However, I have always warned that presenting Centro to first time visitors or casual ISG readers as an easy safe place to visit, as a grab-to-go place open to anyone, is IRRESPONSIBLE. One day one will get hurt.

Taxi should be under 15 k, but depending on the time of day can take 15-30 minutes.

In my research for my first trip Medellin I have read 50 pages off this site. MDE looks like a city that I could spent some time in. I am looking at an apartment in Laureles.

Looks like a nice area to spend time in. I think it would make sence to in my first 2 days to take a city tour. When checking out the tours and comments from past customers, Many comments are bad. Anyone have any comments.

Millions of Colombians are there every week. Thousands of tourists go through there as well. Most of them get along just fine.

Myself, I can't imagine a trip to Medellin without spending some time walking El Centro. Staying the whole time in Poblado or Laureles is like vacationing at a world class beach and sitting at the hotel pool.

El Centro is dirty, gritty, noisy and busy. There are times and places where people are packed like sardines. You'll see things that might offend or scare you. But what you're seeing are just average people, going about their lives and trying to get by. They aren't evil or dangerous, just poor.

Anyone that wants to venture out to Parque Lleras, try riding the metro. Just walk down the hill on Calle 10 to the Poblado station. If you can handle the plaza by the station, buy a ticket and get on. It doesn't matter which direction. The first ride is just to give you a chance to stand next to a bunch of poor people without having a panic attack.

Once you're comfortable, take the metro to the Parque Berrio station. Exit the station and spend some time observing Parque Berrio. See the girls walking around selling cups of tinto (coffee). See the people talking, or just sitting around people watching. All just normal people, doing normal things.

From there you have many options. You can walk east through the alley next to the church, past all the vendors selling porn DVDs, to the next street, turn left, cross the street and be in the Junin walking street. There's a McDonald's if you get too nervous. Or try Hacienda for a good, but overpriced, Colombian meal. At the north end of the walking street you'll find Parque Bolivar, although it was closed for construction in July. Be careful of the hookers in the area, some are trannies. When Parque Bolivar is open, there's a big flea market on Saturday.

Or, from Parque Berrio you can walk south, towards San Antonio station. Turn west and you'll find thousands of shops selling cheap clothing. Practically every building is a mini mall. Some stores are no bigger than a hotel bathroom. Just a few blocks from the San Antonio station you'll find the street of shoes, nothing but kiosks selling sneakers.

I find the whole area fascinating. That's Medellin. Poblado is pretty, but it has no personality.

Look around very closely in this area, and if this area makes your skin crawl, than you scratch this area off as a venue to enjoy the Senoritas of Medellin.

You pretty much can just walk around these places by yourself.

He checked it out and said he left right up out of the place. He was too good for the hores there. He is what you would call a snooty monger. He has to have his mongering with a smattering of Grey Poupon and Dom Perignon. For me it's a hole and a heartbeat, heartbeat optional.

Then the first time I took my dad to Vila Mimosa in Rio he was the same way. But when we went back, he took to it like a fish to water. Some people just have to get over the initial shock.

I hope it was not a cowboy hat in perfect Texas Style, otherwise it would be so much hilarious that it would fit with Mr. Bean. This is not Dallas, it's not even "Columbia": it's Medellin, Colombia.

However, it's not entirely your fault, but also of those who teased you so much to lead you to imagine the place was "Pussy-for-All Paradise". It is not. If you read more, you should know. Addressing unaware tourists to the Centro like if it was Banana Beach is irresponsible, period.

What's the thrill in walking at Bazurto, if not to buy fruit or just looking at exotic Colombian real genuine people without tourists around?

The Centro of Medellin is much more enjoyable than, say, the Bronx in NYC 25 years ago. I remember there were also tour operators for stupid tourists, who were taking folks on a bus to feel the thrill to go to streets infested by gangs. Local guys, of course paid by the tour operator, were also attacking the bus with chains and sticks, to make those tourists to feel the heart break.

By the way, since I mentioned the Bronx, I understand you don't know what was the BRONX in Bogota, neither you have even approached it from side streets. That was a place not suitable even for Darth Vader!

I do not remember its name, but almost at the side of the Museo de Antioquia (at right, looking at the museum) there is a very traditional place full of billiard tables, with old photos and frames to the walls, cheap beers, and 100% paisa people playing. I spent 2 hours there, but many years ago.
No, no girls servicing there. Only men in Juan Valdez style with moustache and hat (of course, see: hats are important in Medellin!).

I understand you missed the best of the Centro: the Museo de Antioquia, with 3 floors of paintings, 1 almost entirely dedicated to Botero. It is one of the main art institutions of Colombia. Museo de Antioquia and Museo de la Moneda in Bogota are the two museums where most master pieces of Botero are on display. Go there, you will thank me.

Besides New Life can anyone tell me the name of some good casas in Medellin.
