Having someone else make them is a huge relief. I've never paid for a guide that wasn't worth every penny.
My English-speaking guides in Vietnam told me what time to meet them and our driver in the hotel lobby in the morning. Had a great time all day, then back to the hotel in the evening and I was on my own. It was the best.

The only time I will ever hire a guide of any sort is when I'm doing something like a tour of a new city, and I want to learn things that I know I never would just by touring around on my own. Examples with respect to Brazil were when I went to Curitiba and Florianopolis where I had tour guides for a day show me around and tell me about the history of those cities. I plan to do the same thing when I go to Salvador later this year. But it's for learning about the history and culture of place, and not for safety, security, mongering, or anything like that. For those things, I'm quite comfortable moving about on my own, and it's more fun for me that way too. I don't need anybody holding my hand for that. Besides, some things are more of a personal nature (like where and who I'm fucking), and I want to tightly control who knows about my whereabouts and sexual shenanigans.
