I'm curious, I can drive a motorbike just fine but I don't have a motorbike license here in the USA. It's too crazy to drive where I live.

How strict are the motorbike rental places in Thailand? I'm probably not renting in Bangkok because that looks like a death sentence!

But generally they will rent to you with just your driver's license. I always get an International license from AAA for $20. I have always been able to rent with my state license and the international license.

Dealing with the police is another matter. They may stop you and require an International that has a motorcycle endorsement on that license. I never had the endorsement. I got stopped once and paid the ticket. On two other occasions I was able to bribe the officer. After the second bribe I stopped renting. All of my rentals were in Pattaya and Vietnam.

I just got back from a long trip down the western side of the gulf. Cha Am to Surat Thani (skipped past Hua Hin). Rented a bike in every town I stopped in. One guy asked for 'key money,' 300 baht, which I got back. Everyone else was like yeah it's 250 baht a day, pay when you bring it back. No one asked for a license, passport, nothing.

[/QUOTE]This gets way over-blown. It's tight, and everyone is lane splitting like crazy, so coming from the west it can seem pretty frantic / scary. But really all the chaos happens at very low speeds. High chance to get in an accident? Sure. But at the speeds involved the most likely consequence* is a little road rash on your pointy bits, not OMG DEATH.

* Assuming wearing a helmet. Not to rant or anything but bonking your head on the blacktop can be very very bad, even at low speeds. Skinned knees and elbows, so what.

Edit to add: If you're a tourist i.e., not living here, there's no reason to have a scooter in Bangkok.

She was like I know what that is for. Then I went to the shop on South Pattaya where I get my stickers made and the lady did it no problem.

I've ridden countless kilometers both in Thailand (used to use my motorbike for visa runs a long time ago) and Europe, and unless you live in India or something like that, "I can drive (ride) fine, but don't drive motorbike at home because it's too crazy there. Also I don't have a bike license either" sounds like something one of those tourists you see on youtube would say, just before crashing into a car on the other size of the road as they leave the rental shop.

If you live in India, yeah, maybe the driving at home is crazy compared to Thailand. But when living in the USA or Europe? Makes no sense.

I am scheduling a trip which will hopefully include a 24 HR stay in Bkk. Just happens to be landing on October 13th which I see is "King Bhumibol Memorial Day".

For those living there, Do you know if bars, go-go's, MP shops will be open or closed on that day? From what I can understand they do stay open on National Holidays?
