Take a look at Amazon audible Michel Thomas beginner Portuguese it goes over many of the similar English words. Then pimsleur there are many 30 minute lessons that you will recognize the Spanish words and the different pronunciation but same word, it's a good place to get started. Knowing Portuguese is great if you want to hang out with the girls but if you're just going to hit the massage places or Termas or privis it's really not needed much.

I have watched youtube videos of Portuguese to learn it with flashcards and what not. I was surprised by how much easier it is to learn Portuguese after studying Spanish consistently and some words are similiar, then for the words that are different just remember the Portuguese version after saying the spanish version in your head then when you get stuck on a Portuguese word just try to think of what it is in Spanish to help you remember what it is in Portuguese. I say study Portuguese for like 2 weeks before you go to Brazil and you will be able to have easy short convos in Portuguese just like you can in Spanish. At least that is how I felt when I was studying Portuguese earlier this year. I am hoping to go to Brazil end of next year or in 2028 so don't need to study yet anymore for now.

It is nice to be able to throw around some conversational phrases particularly in a termas or night club. I know some Spanish and yes there are some similarities. However, the Portuguese language has very different sounds for a few letters. For instance, an O at the end is pronounce as "ooh". A letter T or the have a soft sound if followed by an I or an unstressed E with some variation.

Don't worry Brazilians know we mix up some of the sounds. It's not difficult in practice. You will hear the differences on the ground. This is what gives Portuguese it's soft sound.

As far as Pimsleur and other language programs, I think you need to spend months with these and even then your comprehension might be low. It's easier to say things then to hear Portuguese and respond. I would recommend something like Portuguese in Ten Minutes a Day focusing on what I would call Travel Portuguese. It will allow you to do basic travel things and have some simple back and forth with the ladies, the desk clerk, the waitress, et cetera.

Now if you plan to spend a lot of time in Brazil, then definitely go with an extensive language program.

I just got back from a recent trip to Rio a while back. I was in the area for work so I really didn't have time to stay out late or be adventurous so I stuck with FatalModel for screening a few girls. You go to New Orleans and they have everything under the sun to buy that says Mardi Gras. In Brazil, nothing. I was lucky that the hotel I stayed in in Salvador was giving out tshirts to the guests for a party they were having. I got mine framed as it was the only carnaval souvenir available between both Salvador and Rio.
