My question is, is it risky to push back and stand your ground with them? Or is it all about preparing correctly, having the correct amount, and being very cautious about belongings, etc?

One more note, the expat community here is very good. They are friendly and helpful. Also the beaches are beautiful and the food is surprisingly good if you ask around for recommendations. It's only the hobby element that is lacking, but I have been told that if you take your time sifting through the rough and finding the gems it is worthwhile.
I also think when you see decent looking girls here you need to take the initiative and approach them. If you are shy like me and leave it to the girls to call to you, it is generally the worse ones that will pursue you. I think this point has already been made but it's an important note.

However, if you approach a chica you losing negotiation powers. Many times chicas start of with very high asking prices because you are chasing them.
It's like damn if you do and Damn if you don’t. Welcome to the Su! After 9 years; I have learned to try and read the chicas overall demeanor. Finding a good chicas take skilz, money and / or luck.

Before leaving, she stole some money from my desk while putting on clothes. She denied it but wouldn't empty out her purse. I didn't force the issue as I don't want confrontation with these ghetto types but I told security. He didn't seem to want or know how to help so he just gave her the ID back and she left.
It was only $20-40 stolen so I wasn't overly bothered. I went back out to try and find a better girl but couldn't find one. The quality is really low in Sosua. I can't stress that enough. If you are not concerned with looks or performance and just want cheap street girls then this place may work for you. Many first time well traveled guys come to the Su with high expectations. Quite often those guys are disappointed. If you have been to other well known hunting grounds you actually have something to compare the Su to. In my case, Colombia and Cuba hands down outperform the DR in chicas sexual performances.
However, the DR provides more simplicity. Beach, beer, rooms and chicas all in a short distance. Not to mention the area is tourist friendly and has a large amount of ex-pats. Couple that with inexpensive quick flights from the US is what makes the DR attractive.

Yes there are many chicas available however their overall quality has dropped from recent years. If your expectations aren't high you should be content. Yes the prices are relatively cheaper compared to the US. Yes there are places to eat and you don't need to know much Spanish. Yes Prostitution is legal. No GFE is not a give me. Yes a large majority of chicas would rather hustle and rush you than perform as expected. Anyone telling you different setting you up for disappointment.
The guys that do well in the Su are the ones that know what to expect firsthand or first timers with little to no expectations. I feel this is the reason why so many new younger guys are hitting the scene. I also feel like this is why the chicas look more like rap video vixens. They are of the younger age group thats culturally connected to mainstream hip hop culture.
For a lot of us older mongers the chica attraction is not what it used to be but everything else is in order. Some of us continue to deal with it and others have moved on to other pastures.

To be succesful is in this hobby you have to make sure the Alpha Male in you shows up, especially in DR. If you can't get your change from a massage girl then you are not ready for Sosua or DR in general. Blackbeards is probably the best option for you. Dominicans are husslters in general. Best thing is to ignore ignore and ignore. Tell anybody to ger away from you when they get into your personal space.
What makes Sosua great in my opinion is the fact that its close to US, everything is within a 5 min walk, the beach, the food, and clubs, and you alawys meet new friends. About the type of girls I feel like it is pointless discussion. I am not there with you so I can't see what you are seeing. I have heard people say the samething while together in Sosua and see them going with the dirty street girls or the girls you see at the german bars. I am never taking those.
I have seen so many guys get disappointed because they make quick deal with the agressive, dirty and cheap girls whose business model is to guys who are shy and luck confidence.
Girls quality has gone down for sure but if you are a good negotiator and you are willing to pay around 3000 pesos for an hour you can still get a top quality girl if your specs are big natural booty, small waist, good tits and cute face (dark or light skin) if you preference is white girls in general then Sosua isn't the place for you.

You can't expect 50% are girls to be 9's or 10's in an area unless you go in a brothel or stripclub that have stricts selection on girls. Yes quality has gone down but doesn't mean there arent some 9's to be found for the correct price. The reality is prices has gone up in many places.
