Similar arrangement now in both Melbourne and Sydney where you get in a line and are directed to the next taxi according to a numbered system.

In SVB the ticket from the machine shows the taxi bay number, the taxi reg number and the driver's name. He will be waiting for you. They obviously punch in their details when they enter the taxi bay.

I did not see any add-on charges on the ticket.

There is an officer standing at the machine to direct people to their waiting cabs.

Even if there is a line it moves remarkably fast.

I have never needed to waste time traipsing up to "Departures" with baggage and then trying to catch a waiting cab who has dropped off departing passengers.

For me, the system at Arrivals works well; I have never had any hassles or drivers trying anything to scam me.

Where's the best place buy toys in Bangkok apart from the street markets. Any help appreciated.

The 50 baht airport fee is enforced as an add on to the meter reading, it is not shown in the meter fare.

It is levied by the airport (lots of airports try to make ancillary revenues by milking passengers in many ways). It has been authorized 3-4 years ago by the Department of Civil Aviation (ruling airport areas). The weird thing is that the authority didn't make it compulsory to be paid (not cashed by them, so they don't care) but it is up to the taxi driver. Pretty sure drvers have to pay it to the airport handler AOT.

Taking a taxi deommdepeture level is officially prohibited and police patrols the lanes enforcing the law from time to time, but often not.

Can be good if and when lines are massive at arrivals (less than before). Still taxi drivers try to scam with exaggerated fixed fares. Just be assertive on using the meter plus highway fees. Or set a deal sign you, 400 b. Aware more than enough to go to sukhumvit incl tolls (the two station route).

From my discussion with my regular Thai GF I don't think you will find them anyplace but the street vendors. She says no stores in thailand. First time she worked in Singapore she saw a shop and was a bit shocked apparently.

Of course the poor front-men hardly make a better wage than flipping burgers at your local greasy burger joint. And on top, they catch the bullets and the prison sentences.

Why do you think there are next to no pimps operating in Thailand (the occasional lazy Thai BF not counting)? Because prostitution is not illegal and girls can ply their trade relatively free from harassment by all and sundry officials.

Once one guy did only one toll station and exited in the proximity of Asoke, another one exited after one toll and ended up at the very end of Soi 3.

Not a big deal if traffic is ok. Can be a nightmare of peak hour (not for nothing one chooses the motorway).
