Of Mice, Men and Morons..
Somewhat buoyed by the kind words afforded me by Piper and 11bravo, I venture once more into the ISG fray.
As a viewer rather than monger I have had a somewhat busy week weaving my way through the peaks and pitfalls of the Dubai live music scene (its a good job most of the bands I go to see also happen to be playing in favored ISG venues, or I'd be somewhat redundant to these forums).
Thursday 16th - Music Room - 7-9pm
Males 37, Females 6 (Civs), Female WGs 1 (L3)
One would think with a ratio like that the wg in question, PRC, would have had her hands full, but perhaps I am being generous in awarding her L3. Does anyone else agree with me that the Flipside Band (they're the ones who aren't Filipino) are becoming more boring by the minute - not satisfied with talking rubbish between songs, the guitarist has now decided that the best way of wowing the crowd is to turn his back on them - for entire songs. Sorry my friend but you are ugly enough from the front. Also, what is the point of having pool tables with pockets the size of beach balls - just aim in their general direction and down she goes.
So, having endured a thoroughly pointless two hours, off to a new venue for me...
Rocky's at Regent Hotel - 9.15pm-12.30am
Males 200+, Females 150+, wgs unknown, but I would guess 30 spread around
Now this is more like it. Were I a monger in the truest sense, PIs would definitely be my dish of choice, and the quality of both Civs and wgs at Rocky's is only augmented by the obvious attractions of some of the girls in the two bands there. Not to dwell on the latter too much, but strategically placed as I found myself in line with the stage, I took time to admire the curvaceous nature to the performers; one in particular who has one of the finest rears these tired eyes have ever seen.
A quick note those more interested in carnal delights - when we arrived there were few obvious wgs, but from about 10pm onwards several groups in 3s and 4s started to arrive and by 11pm there seemed to be a liberal smattering around what is quite a large bar area. Given the fact that this is predominantly a Filipino club, there seemed to be little competition for their wares - and for a Thursday night it was busy but not uncomfortably so.
The bands were fairly decent, the better of the two being 'Prime Pitch', but both were let down by poor song selection, so by 12.30, and given my rationale for being out in the first place, I toyed with the idea of braving 'homebase' on a Thursday, thought better of it and scuttled off home to catch up on the latest downloaded episodes of Entourage.
Friday 17th - Tiya Maria at Chelsea Hotel - 9.30-11.30pm
Yes I know, another Filipino bar, but lets face it there’s something quite alluring about a six-piece all-girl Filipino band! As previously stated, these gals aren't bad, but not terribly good either, yet in terms of eye-candy they are an ideal start to an evening. Place was fairly busy when we arrived, but by 11pm pretty much packed and wgs confirmed numbering about 20. I say confirmed as my colleague in crime was adamant that they were in fact civs and decided to prove his point...nothing like seeing a good friend with egg on his chin.
Fun, but not enough to keep me interested, so we decided it was time to head to my other home.
Home (Seaview) 11.44pm-3am
You will note 11.44 - not a typo, simply proof of my musical timing in terms of the second set, but for some reason the band were a little late. Having ensconced myself at my usual table :) I realized that the dance floor was a seething mass of Filipino rhythm! Oh JOY, what a great beginning! I have honestly never seen so many PI wgs at the Seaview before, so many that they had overflowed from their usual corner and were situated in giggling groups all around the bar. Viewer heaven, and the band hadn't even arrived.
On arrival, they seemed somewhat subdued (conversations later revealed that someone in the crowd had seriously pissed the girls off), but they bucked up and soon proved, once again, why are by far the best in town. Spent a good ten minutes sizing up the crowd to see if I could identify Piper, but to no avail...gave up when I realized I was spending far too much of the band's time looking at men (and right after the manager looked at me quizzically and asked me if I was 'feeling alright').
And now to the crux of the matter (title). Why is it that some 'mongers', (I use the term loosely as it in no way refers to seasoned ISG veterans) are unable to differentiate between wgs and barstaff/bandmembers. Why does the world include assholes who think it’s a great idea to send lewd suggestions to the band members, or feel its ok and relevant to feel up waitresses. Conveniently for me and my somewhat protective nature, especially when I'm at 'home', the latter occurred right beside me and unfortunately for the moron in question, right beside the extremely large Filipino bouncer who seems to be the only member of the security staff at the Seaview who doesn't spend his evenings setting up the balls on the pool table. I was therefore able to enjoy the moron in question being placed in a rather firm headlock, assist in his ejection from the club, and then view firsthand what is done to someone such as this, in the confines of a quiet and secluded carpark.
Fired up with adrenaline (as I may still be as I've just realized this is an unreasonably long post), I very nearly broke my golden rule and went over to the ‘darkerside’, but was saved by several rather disapproving looks from bandmembers. To calm myself down I recommenced my Piper search, but soon fell back into the Band's spell, stumbling out at 3am, proud, satisfied (well almost) and ready for the next adventure.
Farewell all, until next time..
*enough activity this week for at least three more reports, but I'll wait until Saturday when my head once again clears*
