I am well aware common sense in any unfamiliar surroundings is sound advice but sometimes its just not enough as its best not to be there in the 1st place.
I've lived in New York City and LA and Chicago in the past and there are areas that outsiders should not enter at night as locals (gangs and thugs) knows you dont belong there and mugging and beating/shooting people up accordingly. And believe me , When friends from out of town visited me in NYC in the past ,Ive often taken the NYC subway map and crossed off stations that they should never get off as they are very high crime areas. I know that crime will happen anywhere (good or bad areas) but the chances are much higher in bad/ high crime areas.

Although it's always good to show common sense wherever you go, I think anyone coming to Bangkok with Western concepts of big city crime needs to get rid of those notions quickly. Of my years in Thailand, 5 have been spent living in this city. It is one of the safest places I've ever lived. While I've been mugged in Toronto, in broad daylight on a subway train, London, in Green Park near Buckingham Palace, and had a gun stuck to my temple in Kashmir, I've never been afraid to walk anywhere at anytime, day or night in Bangkok. I've walked through Klong Toey, the poverty pit of Bangkok at 3 in the morning and only been greeted by smiles and the odd 'hello'. I lived for 2 1/2 years at Lam Salee, the centre of the sourthern Thai enclave. You can't get any more aggressive in this country, than southern Thai men. But, other than a few smart-ass insults hurled my way by some southern Thai wankers, I've never been challenged or threatened. Although, I'm sure walking around the docks in Sathu Pradit at night isn't probably the best idea, Thais generally don't go looking for a fight. If they do, it's usually with each other. The only time I have ever seen problems it was caused by Farang themselves; usually drunk and looking for a fight. They almost always get the shit kicked out of them by a group of pissed off Thai guys and they more often than not are English or Australian Lager Louts (with appologies to the English and Australians who aren't Lager Louts).
Sure, there is petty crime at the hands of katoeys or the occasional freelancer who may drug some hapless Farang guy. But, those have been blown out of all proportion on boards like this. You're morely likely to be victimized by another tourist before ever having a problem with a Thai.
I will say however, that if you travel to the once idyllic island of Koh Samui, you should definitely be on your guard. There have been numerous reports over the last year of assaults on tourists. The place has become the wild west with local mafia controlling everything, corrupt police and gangs of Thais looking to rob Farang tourists at any opportunity. I wouldn't go near the place if you paid me. But Bangkok? Be polite and nice to the Thais, don't cause problems, use common sense and you will be totally safe.
