Firstly, I agree those were great photos, capturing the atmosphere. Secondly, it's clear in at least one of them that others were taking pics as well (which kinda makes it less heinous! ;)) The girl was obviously putting on a show for anyone who wanted to take a picture. That's a bit different from wandering round with a Pentax round your neck snapping away at anything. Thirdly, tho it looked ok there, I'm always aware that it's one rule for cariocas and another rule for anyone else (this even includes other Brasilians btw, it's not just looking the part - I've several times seen cariocas talk their way out of difficult situations largely on the basis that they are from Rio).
My feeling is that you probably sensed that it was cool to take a photo on this occasion, having taken in the feel of the place. Quite different from taking a photo (or doing anything else) when the inhabitants etc would deem it 'uncool.'
People who know VM well don't need to ask. People going for the first few time I'd say, don't even take a camera with you unless it's one you can hide on your person. And only take it out, with permission, in the room with the girl once you've paid for the session.
I mostly only take pics at the end of a session, once I've established a nice rapport with the girl and she is amenable to such things. However, as someone pointed out (Sperto prob), she looks a damn site better [i]before[/i] you've shagged her brains out. If it's a girl I've had on a previous occasion, I'll maybe for photos first. But there again, I'm not awfully bothered about photos (even if I've contributed my share here). I like a snap to remember her by, that's all.
