Although it's always good to show common sense wherever you go, I think anyone coming to Bangkok with Western concepts of big city crime needs to get rid of those notions quickly. Of my years in Thailand, 5 have been spent living in this city. It is one of the safest places I've ever lived. While I've been mugged in Toronto, in broad daylight on a subway train, London, in Green Park near Buckingham Palace, and had a gun stuck to my temple in Kashmir, I've never been afraid to walk anywhere at anytime, day or night in Bangkok. I've walked through Klong Toey, the poverty pit of Bangkok at 3 in the morning and only been greeted by smiles and the odd 'hello'. I lived for 2 1/2 years at Lam Salee, the centre of the sourthern Thai enclave. You can't get any more aggressive in this country, than southern Thai men. But, other than a few smart-ass insults hurled my way by some southern Thai wankers, I've never been challenged or threatened. Although, I'm sure walking around the docks in Sathu Pradit at night isn't probably the best idea, Thais generally don't go looking for a fight. If they do, it's usually with each other. The only time I have ever seen problems it was caused by Farang themselves; usually drunk and looking for a fight. They almost always get the shit kicked out of them by a group of pissed off Thai guys and they more often than not are English or Australian Lager Louts (with appologies to the English and Australians who aren't Lager Louts).
Sure, there is petty crime at the hands of katoeys or the occasional freelancer who may drug some hapless Farang guy. But, those have been blown out of all proportion on boards like this. You're morely likely to be victimized by another tourist before ever having a problem with a Thai.
I will say however, that if you travel to the once idyllic island of Koh Samui, you should definitely be on your guard. There have been numerous reports over the last year of assaults on tourists. The place has become the wild west with local mafia controlling everything, corrupt police and gangs of Thais looking to rob Farang tourists at any opportunity. I wouldn't go near the place if you paid me. But Bangkok? Be polite and nice to the Thais, don't cause problems, use common sense and you will be totally safe.
OTH, thanks for the post
pretty much have everything here that I requested. Did'nt really plan on visiting these neighborhoods but just wanted to know for my own records where they were located, Afterall, any intel is better than no intel.
And yes, I do feel safer in BKK than any of the US cities I've lived in the past, as I have been victim of crimes at home but so far (fingers crossed) not in BKK.
Peace

So - CB what would YOU consider a "fair rate of compensation" if they didn't get you off?
coma boy - what i pay is fair. it is unskilled labor after all, getting their pussy stretched and sucking for 30 minutes at the most is a local adult male's day's pay, eg 1/7th of 2000, 285 baht. no, i don't expect the girls to pay me, but i expect that they know their job is to know male anatomy and to ensure the male has mind blowing orgasms. fondling the balls is something women often need reminding of, though most los grils know this and are very good at it. a lot need to go to blow job school, and i for one think [CodeWord901]'s should train and certify girls as expert cocksuckers. with such a badge, you will always be assurred of a wet and tight mouth with her cherub lips firmly wrapped around the shaft, looking and making eye contact whilst doing so unless facing down.
allowing for their shelf life, 800-1000 is very, very good money. it is no big deal to them to strip and open up - they have done it many times and often find it mildly pleasurable.
The Budget Police ~ Protect and Serve!
somebody was asking a few days ago if BKK is safe. Most answered with a resounding YES, if you use your head, and are polite etc.
in a cab this morning after having checked out from the GP ( they have done a nice job with the renovations), and just as we hit Sukhumvit, a white guy, with blood streaming down his face comes walking toward the taxi. I open my window, and can hear him shouting obscenities in a "British lager lout" accent to a Thai who is walking behind him brandishing a nice size metal table leg. The white guy is obviously afraid, starts running, and jumps on the back of a motorbike.
This guy was a mess, He literally had blood all over his head, face, shirt, etc.
we get to the intersection, I look left, there is a small metal table set up, with about a dozen empty beer bottles, a whisky bottle, and some glasses. Another white guy is frantically trying to get a uniformed security guard, obviously too drunk to realize the guy is dressed in blue, not in brown, as he is being attacked by a rather matronly Thai woman, who is also brandishing some metal object.
There was a hole is the traffic, we moved on, turned right, and were on our way.
Recipe for disaster. Drink too much, [CodeWord140] off the guy who is pouring drinks. I don't know what happened, but my money any day is on the guy who is sober, regardless of skin color, or language spoken.
What is wrong with some of you guys? Don't you realize how ridiculous you look, at 6.00 AM, sitting on a plastic stool, with empty bottles around you, sweat dripping down your face?.
Most of us behave, go out for a few drinks, find a cute girl, fuck her, and go to sleep, only to wake up at a somewhat reasonable hour. What in the world is fun about being on the street, totally shit faced, watching normal people walk by, as they start their regular day?
Anyway, I hope this guy is alright. Judging by the amount of blood on him, he is probably going to need a trip to the hospital for a few stitches. He saved a few Baht by probably not wanting to pay for al his drinks, and now will pay with massive headaches, stitches, and the hospital bill.
let's play safe, shall we? it also looks bad for all of us, when a few drunk assholes behave like this.
just me 2 satang.
Good post 1Ball.
Guys that come here with a "Macho" attitude usually don't do well in Thailand. When I see a farang that is rude and obnoxious, I smile to myself and make a mental wager on how quickly the Thais will take him down a notch...

I typically don't post many entries on Bangkok, as its so easy to find what you want in Bangkok there is minimal requirement to provide guides and hints. Its only if you want something a bit a-typical that would you consider to make a posting and reading the postings. However one topic is always useful, the topic of price – or more accurately price/performance. The main issue with this discussion is we tend to focus on the price aspect rather than the performance, because its a simple measurement we all understand and agree with. However performance is in many ways more important. As you could imagine paying 500baht for an ugly slag who only growls at you and who does nothing but lies back and thinks of Thailand may not be as good a deal as some honey who looks like she enjoying herself and knows how to make the right moves for 5000 baht. So a lot of disagreements have at their basis different standards of “performance”.
However there is one standard we can use to measure “fair price” and that is the typical clubs the local Thai's go to. These range from high-class (Like Paragon and Cleopatra) to middle class (like Tables and the Piano Bar). The reason why we can get a fair idea of the correct rice/performance from these establishments is they are all based on repeat business. Typically you need to become a member, which normally costs about 30000-20000 baht a year. This gets you free access to the club, perhaps some drinks and free or a low cost access to girls for take-away and a range of addition services in the club, such as KTV rooms, hot tubs at a reasonable price. Because its all about repeat business, the pricing structure remains reasonably fixed and highly competitive.
So what does it cost – this is a grand simplification but the cost is based on the category of girls. Most places have 3 basic categories, Model, Special and Regular. The Model and Regular classifications are simple enough to comprehend, the Special varies a bit. These girls may be very young, may actually be thai's (in case you have not noticed, there are very few Thai providers, they all tend to be from issam, down south, up chang-mae way) or may provide some special service. I never select the “specials” so can't go beyond this basic description – i mainly select the model categories. Within the Model category (and i assume the other 2 as well) you get a further sub-division of class A, B and C. The girls get rated on a regular basis by the owner, based on face, body, attitude, health, and customer feedback. At the high class places the LT price ranges are typically 6000baht class A, 5500baht class B and 5000baht class C. In the middle class places it ranges from 3000-4000 baht. LT means until 6am and these places normally open about 9pm – so you can get a reasonably amount of time with them.
At the places i go to the girls are all under 25 (some minimal exceptions), get regular health check up's and are not allowed to go with customers at either end of their periods – to prevent the customers old fellows getting covered with blood when they extract – not a pleasant experience sometimes. They get some basic training, mainly around attitude and the owners often will ask their member's to comment on the girls performance. I assume this has some effect on their classifications?
So – you now know the price at the high end. As for most of the places in soi-cowboy, you should never pay the girls these type of prices – and typically the girls never expect it (although they will always try). In my experience the bars with the best looking girls tends to be a place in patpong i go to (You will get about 3-4 model types), a few places in nana (normally 1-2 low-class model types, although lately the quality has been terrible) and perhaps Shark in soi (normally 1-2 low-class model types, although even here the quality has been a bit poor lately) None of these girls are as good as the clubs i mentioned above – but they are close. Perhaps 3000baht for LT is ok for the real nice girls with good attitude* – but for the 99% of the rest the prices quoted in the recent posts are reasonable – although i must admit girls for under 1000baht tend to be less that attractive in my experience.
Of course if you speak Thai the price/performance equation does change outside the clubs. You have a good range of very low cost girls available – so go for it.
* = There is a nice half Issam half falang girl in patpong which is good looking (face and skin is western, body Thai) which has a great attitude and good skills – i have no idea why she is working in a girlie bar in patong, but she always gets my attention.

Your story is all to familiar for this time of year. I saw a similar incident a few weeks ago on soi 4 near the Raja with a drunk Brit surrounded by 4 Thai guys. I don't know what it was about. But, he had his hand on one guys neck and was swearing at him while the other guys closed in. As I passed, I warned him to back off and run immediately. He told me to "Fuck Off" and I said, "Don't say I didn't warn you." And, I kept going. Shortly afterwards, I glanced back and saw the Thai guys just pummeling and kicking the shit out of this guy as he lay curled up on the ground.
Although I don't like to make generalizations, it seems that overwhelmingly it is usually some drunk Brit git in one of these incidents. The few times I've been in Pattaya, I've witnessed several fights in bars and it's usually Brits.
What is it with you guys? Still pissed that the sun has set on the British Empire? Still think you can go anywhere in the world and act like you fucking own the place? Who do you think you are...Americans? ;-)
My ex-gf used to work on reception at the Dynasty Inn and now works at the new Dynasty on soi 6. Before getting this job, she had no experience of BKK and less of Farang tourists. She told me that the worst guests were always the Brits and asked me why they are always drunk and rude (and as an aside, always had the ugliest BGs with them). I told her that only a certain class of Brit seems to come to Thailand on holiday, usually working-class, and named Nigel from Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, the outskirts of London (Greys, Luton, Wembley etc.) or some other English shit-hole. They, more than any other seem to transplant their culture of ignorance, rowdiness, drunkeness and violence wherever they go. I've witnessed their bad behaviour in various countries around the world and heard locals wherever I've gone cursing them and wishing them to leave. In recent years this type have become a blight on Thailand and have made it bad for all other Farang because Thais like to lump us all into the same category as they are generally not aware of the differences between Farang. So, we are all tarred and feathered with the same brush when assholes like these drunken sods cause problems.
I've read on this forum guys saying that, it's their holiday and they'll do what they like. This is just plain ignorance. I made the mistake once of using a phrase something like " we're ambassadors of western culture". That's certainly a bit high-handed. But, we are definitely guests here and should act accordingly.
I love watching the British scumbags taking a beating, serves the assholes right. Thailand really does attract the worst of Britain, most ex-cons fly straight here a few days after their release. There are a few nice Brits too, but only those from zone 1 London.
I think the solution would be to refuse entry to anyone arriving at Don Muang who is wearing jewelry, has tattoos, white socks, drops their Ts, etc. Or simply increase the cost of LHR-BKK to several thousand pounds.
Seriously though, the Thai police really should just shoot these dumb fucks on sight.
I know lots of nice brits. But I agree, many of them too have some alcohol problem; -)
I am german (though not spending a lot of time at home), after all this elaboration about british guys, what do you think about germans?

Being a Brit myself i am afraid the behavour you see in Bangkok is exactly the same behavour as you would see back in the UK, after midnight, around the working class pubs. The culture of Fuck or Fight is ingrained into many parts of British work class culture, possibly a result of the ingrain class system which still exists in the mother country - unfortunatly - and i have seen it several times in bangkok, much to my disgust.
On the other hand i must admit many other countries export their bad habits also, austrailians drink far too much (although they tend to be happy drunks), germans never tip the girls (and my father is german so i can relate this this), the french expect the girls to give them money for their company - and the list goes on.
However trust me, the girls can tell us farangs apart and will target the racial grouping they think will give them the less hassle, most money possible. Americans and Japanese tend to be the preferred target - with rought looking poms at the bottom of the list - humm - makes life difficult for me unfortunatly.
On the other hand, the place i live in asia (beijing) the girls love us english - possibly because there are no aggressive poms to be found in beijing - so i have at least one place where i feel welcome.
There are a few nice Brits too, but only those from zone 1 London.
Interesting point. All the undercover investigations into organised 'England' football hooliganism find that most of the ringleaders are Londoners with high-end professions - stockbrokers and suchlike. And it's the same for other football hooligan hotspots such as Italy and Turkey (where the hooligan violence tends to be even more violent). Maybe only the 'ground troops' go to cheap-as-chips Thailand.
Everyplace I've visited in Thailand (apart from the tourist traps on Koh Samui which, as has been pointed out by OTH, have an aggressive vibe) has struck me as markedly safe and civilised compared to European and U.S. cities. Not that violence doesn't happen (as documented in this thread), but I've never witnessed one single incident in LOS, let alone been involved in one. But I've always said that people who look for trouble (even as voyeurs) usually find it, and people who don't rarely do.
Gents,
Can anybody tell me where can I find sex toys to buy in Thailand?
Regards,
Gulfro
