Since the gov is trying so hard to clean up rio for the upcoming World Cup and the Olympics, I have a question. Why dont they have police riding the buses in Rio?!!! Almost every single brasilian I have ever met in the past 14 years has been robbed at gun point while riding the bus. WHy the fuck arent there police or armed guards on them? It seems like a very easy way to curb armed robbery in rio.
Unless the powers that be, think that millions of tourist will only take taxis and the metro back and forth for the games, it seems like common sense to do something to stop the muggings on the buses. I have friends who I wont even go visit because I know the road to thier barrio is a bandito hotspot for bus robbery.

Speaking about safety, I have been in Rio for a few days, and hoping to do some hobbying at L'Uomo when my meetings are over. But, when walking along the promenade at Ipenama Beach after dinner, my Brazilian hosts got very worried about a couple of guys that they felt were targeting us and made us get on a bus just to avoid being robbed. This was under the lights on a very busy street with lots of people around.
Given that I only speak English and stick out like a sore thumb as a tourist, is going to L'Uomo, even by taxi, safe? Should I go to Monte Carlo instead, since maybe it is easier to locate without walking around Copacabana at night? What's a reasonable time to go to the termas safely?
I'd hate to miss the termas experience since I have hobbied all over the world, but now I'm thinking twice about going.
Thanks, R.
R the man, go to Luomos and MC at any hour, you are safe. Unless you are walking around centro late at night, there really isnt too much safety issues about going to termas.

Rio's a big city with a very high number of buses, 24hrs. That would be an awful lot of police and an awful lot of money. Some buses do have video installed though. How many Brasilians are you talking about? From my own experience (over a slightly shorter period) it's not nearly as common as that. But then I know a lot of sensible Brasilians who are choosy about which buses they take and when (probably more than I lol).

They wouldnt need police on every bus, like everywhere else in the world, there are crime hotspots. There are some routes that are more prone to hijacking, than others. Eventually, the gov will have to do SOMETHING about the situation because they will be hosting two of the biggest events in the world soon! Put a few undercover police on some of the routes, kill a few banditos while they try to rob the bus and the word will get out.
I have seen the cameras on the buses too,not sure how a video camera helps me when a bandito has a gun to my head,. If anything, the video camera just provides footage for the Balanco Geral show. Just last week, I saw footage of a youth walking onto the bus and shooting the driver like 5 times, all he got was the cell phone and money in the drivers pockets, then he ran away. Video camera didnt help the driver but I am sure it helped the ratings on the show.

What you suggest makes perfect sense. However, I can think of one reason to keep the police off the buses. I remember standing in a bank line with a friend and how nervous she got when the money pickup and the accompanying armed guards arrived. She said it was the worst time to be in the bank because there might be a shootout.
I can see this same thing happening on the buses. Police in Rio shoot to get their man. If someone else happens to be in the way, oh well.

Leaving neither termas late at night is safe. There are taxis immediately outside Monte Carlo and security will walk you from L'uomo to the street to the taxis there. Take them.
I was renting an apartment near MC and thought I would just walk. I was accosted by a gang of five older guys. Four approached from the rear while another ran ahead to block my path. I immediately ran into a hotel and called a taxi.
Given how much you are paying for your termas experience, does it really make sense not to take a taxi? The original poster described himself as a Rio first-timer who only speaks English, he should not think twice about taking taxis.

Thanks ET. I was intending to take a taxi, but I read that Luomo is in a shopping mall, and I was wondering how secure that might be at night, say about 8-11 pm.
Guess I'll give it a try...

You will be OK. The taxi will drop you off on either side of the shopping center. Once you enter you will go to the second floor. Before leaving ask the receptionist (who speaks English) to have security walk you down to a taxi (you might want to tip him R$5+). Be sure to have the address of where you are going written down so you can give it to the driver. The drivers outside L'uomo are cool and will take you directly to where you need to go.
I was in L'uomo the other night and they have a nice selection of attractive and friendly girls. Well worth a visit.
I still do not understand why mongers pay the Barbarella girls so much money. I see them in Balcony or the Pussycat strip club, and they fit end. I het girls at these places want R150.00 for a few hours each time, and if I give taxi money they stay later to all night. So why give the Barbarella girl R500-600?
It's the same as buying clothes at the start of the season and at the end. If you buy a pair of shorts in June they will always be more expensive than in October. Pussycat and Balcony are like outlet stores, if a girl from Barbarellas is there it is either because she wasn't bought at full price or she is second hand. Barbarellas has a cut off point for girls returning after a session, I think it is 1am, if she is not interested in going home she may well go to Balcony for a bit of extra cash.
But how many of you have actually seen with your own eyes a Barbarellas girl working in Balcony? Not been told by a girl that she works there, but actually seen her in both locations.

Prime example, just last week a bandit attempted robery on the bus. An off duty policeman just happend to be on the bus. He drew his service revolver and shot the perpetrator but the bullet accidently passed through the bad guy and also hit the bus driver.

so a r350-600 gdp is out he question. i know that some guys ignore the price for what they want with a fantasy. r150 is great price for a clean and lustful gdp. there is another barbarella gdp who is part of the same circle. she cried at the table in balcony because now the game has changed and the money isn't easy competing with the lower cost post helpee gdp buyers market. the grl in the picture mentioned to my firend that i wouldn't take her home for r350. when we all walked over to the pussycat. i asked her again and she stayed at r350. at day break we all caught a cab, dropper her off at her apartment on ns the copa, and me and a pussycat went to my apartent for r150 completa and her taxi home.
thank you very much!
I have been out of Brazil for a year now and its time to make my run back down. I was reading the treads and looking at the Help pictures and its sad, I had soo much good memories of that place... from my first to last time in the building. I was one of those mongers that at least visited Help twice on every vacation, but over the years I started to drift away from it. After discovering the newspaper ads, the internet, Termnas, and other play spots in Copa, Help did not appeal to me that much because I now had other sources. Nevertheless I still went to Help because of its legendary status and guaranteed meat market, now its gone and it will be strange walking by and not seeing those dancing feet anymore.
Now from here I see that Balcony is picking up the slack, but it has big shoes to fill. This trip down I am going to party hard in Centro with the Termnas; 502, Black and White, and 4x4. What is the latest word on Luana? Has anyone spotted her at 502 or Black and White lately? This trip I am also finally going to party hard in Sao Paulo, I found out couple of the video girls are working over there plus I get to catch a Corinthians game. Sao Paulo might just fill the void Help has left in me.

I can say that I have seen that happen couple times, matter of fact one of my best playmates used to work at Barbarellas, then come up to Help. She used to tell me that week days after work she would stay outside at Balcony unless it was raining, but on the weekends she would go inside Help. A friend and I went to Barbarellas and saw her once, but I was not going to take her out for those prices. We mostly saw her and her co-workers from Barbarellas outside Help when we were coming to the club.
