I live in Puerto Plata. The only street hookers I have seen are skanks and trannies. Of course you might get lucky and pick up a nice chica, especially on the Malecon in the daytime, but if you are on holiday you could waste a lot of time looking.
The only sure things are to be found in the clubs and bars, ranging from Dominican bars with 300 salidas and 800 ST to Cristal and El Bohen at the top of the scale.
Those of us living in Puerto Plata prefer it because chicas are cheaper and generally with fewer problems than those from Sosúa but it takes time to network and build up your little black book. For example, while writing this post I have been interrupted twice to ...
1) ... answer a phonecall from the son of my former novia saying he is bringing round a fresh 18-year-old, one of his classmates, to my condo tonight. If I keep her for the night she will get 1000 pesos and he will get 250 "introduction fee".
2) ... talk at the condo outer gate to a tiguere who wanted to bike me to view two "young and flaca" haitianas somewhere in a neighbouring barrio. Similar charges would apply if I like them.
This stuff goes on all the time so I don't have time or need to visit Sosúa. But if I were just on two weeks holiday here I would never get to meet these people.
The street putas outside of Boehm are some of the scariest looking I have ever seen.
After doing a lot of research I will be going to Blackbeards for the first time in January. It cost about $3000 for the all inclusive places give or take a few dollars for a week, looking at the prices for Blackbeards it looks like I might be able to have a good time for half that price. Anyways thanks for the input.
You should be able to have a good time at BBs for far less than US$1,500.
Hey Charle Pooter,
Since you live in PP can you give me exactly what a tiguere is from a local? If your called a tiguere in the DR is that a positive comment or is it considered derogatory comment?
Thanks

I haven't been here long and am no expert in Dominican Spanish but I understand a tiguere to be someone who is streetwise, lives off his wits, might be a small-time criminal but by no means necessarily so, unlikely to have any regular job and typically hangs around on the streets looking for a quick peso or to pick up women. Is likely to be a good dancer, can be charming but may be violent if offended or threatened. Usually 18 to 40ish.
If you don't want to be considered to be someone like that you would consider it a mild insult. However it is sometimes used as compliment when locals are trying to bullshit gringos that they are great lovers or dancers or have street-smarts. Often you will hear adults call precocious little boys tigueres as a kind of compliment. Also the young lad I mentioned in the same post would probably want to be considered a tiguere as he is desperate to be considered "one of the gang" when he hangs with older guys.
What I don't know is whether this word is used in other Latin countries such as Puerto Rico. I think it is just Dominican but I am not sure.
Excuse me Professor but for how much far under 1,500 are you talking.
I would love to know this for one week.
I'm sorry but I don't overpay but I don't nickel and dime them to death either.

Thanks for posting an expat POV. There's a big difference in what's possible and it helps give us wannabes some perspective.

Yes, they use it in other Latin American countries. In fact, Daddy Yankee says, "Yo soy un Tigre" in one of his songs with the Luny Tunes. A tigre is a gangster. In the DR they will call you a mafioso or a tigre. A mafioso is much worst than a tigre because Mafiosos are all bad. I've never heard it as a term used for great lover. They usually call that person a chulo. When they call children tigres it's because they are acting like little badasses. I guess it can be used as a term for street wise but, it is mostly used for bad men. (ie. Tu eres muy tigre.)

Tiguere is a dominican word, a tiguere is a smart guy, in Puerto Rico we recognize it is a dominican word and we use it to denote how smart a guy is when conquering a girl, it has a wider use in DR. Tu eres un tiguerazo!

I guess the suffix aso or azo added to the ending of words, I guess amplifies the word, ladron (thief) and stronger is ladronaso, mentira (liar) stronger mentirosa. I guess, I am no expert in Spanish.

I'm sorry but I don't overpay but I don't nickel and dime them to death either.
At BB's you could spend a about $1,500 in a week maybe a little more, IMHO, it depends on what you want to do. If you figure $64 ($55 x 16%VAT) a day for the room, $450 for 7 nights. Then if you take 1 girl ST (1500 DOP = $42), and 1 girl LT (3000DOP = $84), for $126 a day, or $882 for 7 days worth of girls (that’s 14 different girls, you could also do 3 ST's a day, and get 21 girls, for the same price). Then about $40 a day for food and drinks (More if you are a heavy drinker) is $240. Then $45 taxi each way from POP = $90, plus $10 for your tourist card. So all in all this itinerary cost $1,672. Now obviously this is not an exact amount or anything, but it is a rough plan. It is very similar to how I budget to plan for my trips. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks Negro562 but we were discussing "tiguere" ranther than "tigre". BoricuaOnline supports my assumption that it is a peculiarly Dominican usage with this meaning and spelling, though it was obviously derived from the wider usage of "tigre" which you describe so well.
Kennilingus: This is a bit out of order but I wanted to say thanks for the current info. on FOD. I posted a summary of several options BB's, FOD and Sosua and some of my FOD info was off the mark. The ID check at FOD did not always happen but I am pleased it does now. I also like that there are more girls around during the day. I always felt bad that girls had to wait around at various places to late in the night when there were no clients.
Again thank you for the recent report of FOD!
Heading to DR for thanksgiving weekend, flying into santiago and driving to north coast with a rental car. Any senior member can give me the comparison between BB, FOD and New Garden. Who has the best hotel accommodating? the condition of the hotel, the rooms, and the facility. don't really care for the chicas as I can manage that on my own. I'm not much the nightlife type as I got that out of my system years ago. Just need to relax, do some excursions and maybe a ST with a chica before calling a night. TIA
