my first post here, so please be patient. i tend to be elaborate, so apologies all around.
just returned a little while ago from bangkok. a friend had recommended the eden club and had given me marc's email address too. unfortunately it was 2 days before i had to leave for bkk.

With your help & others I now have made 2 trips 2 the LOS in the last 7 months & a 3rd will be happening later this early/early next year

I'm not actually back. Just popped in for a read and thought I'd post a couple of things.
My short advice to you is NOT to consider leaving Canada and coming here at present. While there is a critical shortage of qualified foreign teachers here, this apparently hasn't translated into better salaries, or better treatment at the hands of Thai school administrators. Generally, the atmosphere in Thailand is decidely more anti-Farang now. I thought Taksin and his bunch were bad for Farangs. But, he was a pussy-cat compared to the old, military fuddy-duddies who very obviously hate Farang and Western culture, in general.

OTH is right that the mood is very anti-farang in Thailand, though that's something we've been used to for years now. It is very easy to get a teaching job here as there is a dire shortage of teachers, and there is no need for any 'qualification', other than a degree and a willingness to put up with Thais. While it is true the salaries are still about 30-35,000 baht per month, that is enough for upcountry. Alas, it is not enough to live in Pattaya, nor are there many teaching jobs near there, so in effect the entire reason for living in Thailand is invalidated. Imagine living here and being unable to afford the one girl a day we all need to enjoy life? True you can try the 'free' ones but they're an enormous pain in the ass and much less fun than the working girls.
Keep in mind that teaching is almost unbelievably hard work. You have to get up at around seven or eight in the morning, and they will actually expect you to stay till four or five PM! Sheer exhaustion is the guiding theme of the teacher's life. You will also have to 'prepare' a lot of nonsense for various classes that you may know nothing about - usually empty slots are filled by the next farang hired. Even if you're just teaching English you will find that it is really hard work honking away at disinterested Thai rich kids for hours at a time. How can one fill 18 hours a week with blather, week after week, without access to any assitance or materials other than the internet? Ask yourself this.
In short, come and try it if your life in Canada is very miserable like that of most people in North America. Otherwise, stay.

I arrive in Bangkok on Tuesday evening for my first ever trip to SE Asia and am feeling a little nervous. The plan is to travel through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Phillipines over a couple of months combining seeing the wonderful sights with a whole lot of mongering. I've read for a long time about the delights that one can get in SE Asia that are hard to get elsewhere and I want to experience EVERYTHING that is on offer (excluding the ladyboys of course... lol).
I've been reading up on the posts and have noticed that the system of barfines seems very common. If it's not too much trouble, would someone be able to briefly explain how this works so that I don't look like too much of a tool when I start out.
Also, what is the best way for me to know if the places I'm staying in are GF or not? Does one just ask and, if so, is there a sort of code to speak in or do you just ask outright if it's alright to bring girls back to your room? Does one have to book a double room in you want to have 'company'?

Sounds like you're from Oz. Basically, (in Bangkok & Pattaya anyway) you should just come out and ask when booking your accommodations if they charge a guest fee or "joiner fee". I think the direct approach is best. Except for the high-end, family oriented hotel/resorts, most places understand what you are after. They will be glad to take the lady's ID at the front desk and you can take her upstairs. Of course, two or more girls at the same time might be a different story. Most mid-level hotels/guesthouses will not charge you extra to bring a guest overnight. I don't think you need to trouble yourself with booking a double unless you keep a girl for the length of your stay. By booking double some hotels give you two breakfasts.
When you take a girl, the establishment is losing her services for that time so they set a barfine to compensate for it. I am still getting used to it myself as I am still a novice. I have only been to BKK/PTY 3x in the past two years. BF's can be $R150-R300 at a beer bar and up to $R500-R1000 at a go-go. During busy holidays like Christmas and New Years, the bars will jack up their barfines and bar the girls from getting BF'd until 11pm or midnight! My advice is again be upfront and ask the manager.
In general, I think you can get help with the scene pretty easily (in Pattaya anyway from my experience) Most mongers are friendly and willing to show you the ropes. You just need to know how to spot one & maybe buy a round at the bar :rolleyes: When you are expected to arrive at a certain city, post in the Travel thread and solicit a wingman. ISGers might help you out.
