For less tha $100/ night I highly recommend th RMar. It is a really nice hotel, close to the action, but not so close as to be seedy. Nice rooms. Nice pool. Girl friendly (I. E. Go read the recent post comparing Pattaya and Phuket in the Pattaya forum. When he talks about Phuket he is talking about Patong beach. Nearby Soi (Streets) in between the plaza (Please see my previous posts for variation of names) contain quite large fishbowls as well. I only been to one outside the area and I think it was called Bangkok (Why I don't recommend staying there whole trip is that its a bit quiet early.

Phuket is not big and all talk about 1 hour in traffic can happen but it depends on where you going. If you stay in Patong and leave for Katherines around 7 pm it will be about 30 minutes. Taxi, Tuktuk and even the few Taximeter is expensive best is if you can transport yourself on motorbike.

You can also consider staying in Chalong which will keep you close to activities as well but actually have a bar life. (The area near Chalong Pier and nearby). Rawai and surrounding area as well but I'm badly navigated there and normally go with expats and just follow them. That area is cheaper and you can get more value for money.

Don't book all in advance scout out a place you want to start with and then if you like it stay else move on. Most of all enjoy Thailand it is a wonderful place and my first trip is still close to my heart haha.
