Vila Mimosa
Yes, it is all a matter of taste. Personally I don't catch diseases from mattresses and I usually have a knack for knowing what will upset my guts as far as food goes. I've rarely met unclean women in VM. The health consciousness there is at the forefront of sexual health awareness. The freedom of the women who choose to work there, while not perfect because of their financial circumstances, is more visibly not open to control for gain than other establishments. There are community projects to help the women find other trades, and good community support. It's not a haven, but it has a lot of good things going for it for the women there, and it's run from the grass roots up. Basically, it stinks, but only to the nostrils, not to the higher sensibilities. ;)
Here are one or two articles, both academic and trivia, that forum members might enjoy.
I started trying to post google-translated versions where possible but not sure if it will work on all browsers so if there's only Porto, please just search for or use the originals and click on google translate if you require.

Paris Cafe Recreio
So Tuesday nght after a major rainstorm decided to go and revisit one of my old stomping grounds Prais Cafe, 5mins by cab from my hotel.
What hadn`t realized was that for some reason Tuesday is the major day!! Arrived about 11.30pm and the funk music was deafening.
I am knwn at this place so no entrance fee. Lots of people, good looking girls, frenzied atmosphere, after a couple of days just'chilling' I wasn`t ready for this.
Great girls some stunningly good looking, but impossble to talk as the music was very loud. Talked to a couple of girls in the reception area, where you have seating, got some numbers may ring tomorrow. In the end left at 1.30 am and went home.
Last day tomorrow as I go on to China, am feelng I wasted some tme.

I passed by the Meridian last week; it's under construction but looks like it has a long way to go, so we may be waiting on this for some time now.
But it doesn't matter much because there is already a replacement for the Terraco Atlantico and Help combo and that is Balcony bar and Dolce Vita. It really is the same venue with an outdoor restaurant/bar and inside disco, right next door to each other, exactly the same set up but in miniature.
Outside at Balcony bar is pretty much the same people who hung out at TA and inside Dolce Vita is pretty much the same crowd that would have gone inside Help but I think per capita higher quality. Entrance fee is cheaper but drinks are more expensive.
Dolce Vita does not have the same atmosphere as Help had. Of course I went into Help to find a girl but now I see I also liked hanging out there, sometimes just to get lost and find a corner and watch the whole scene and listen to the music pretty much incognito. Then if I saw something I liked I could make a move on it. Dolce Vita is too small for this, there are no corners to hide and watch the scene, there isn't really much room to move around and check everything out, you find a spot and you're stuck there.
There were some nice girls there so maybe it will suffice in the interim until a larger Help replacement comes along in the next year or two.
Dolce Vita definitely doesn't have the same atmosphere as Help. And unless you can get them to let you have a look first, the R20 entrance can be a waste of money. I saw some nice lookers but the place was empty both times that I have checked it out. Balcony is a "zoo". Plenty of women but they start out quoting "hourly" prices! These however can be negotiated down or into long term, but some of them go home alone rather than negotiate. Also ran into a group that tries to get you to go to the Pussycat club to buy expensive drinks. Just another ripoff joint. Entrance is R30 which gets you 2 beers.

A Cautionary Tale..
This post really isn't specific to Rio, it's more applicable to this entire hobby.
I'll add it here because it happened in Rio.
I've now been back almost two weeks. I'm currently in Mexico on spring break with the wife and kids. (which turned out to be a blessing in disguise due to the easy availibility of prescription antibiotics).
Sooo. It all started with a lump in my groin area maybe 4 days after my Rio trip (swollen gland). It ended with burning/stinging while [CodeWord112], and a yellow discharge noticed a few days ago while here in Mexico.
Thats right. You guessed it. The Clap.
Now. How in the fuck did I get The Clap, when I wore a condom with every GDP I banged in Rio? Research on the internet and confirmed by a Dr. Says that it is possible (albeit not likely) to get STD's from BBBJ's. Apparently The Clap (and chlamydia) can live in the throat and infect whomever is sucked. Another Dr. Suggested that what is more likely is that I played with the infected GDP's pussy and then touched my dick.
Of course I have no idea who it was, or how/when it happened.
Some of you may say this is HS Sex Ed 101. But I was floored to say the least.
Luckily I happened to be in Mexico when I found this out. I was able to get Cipro with no questions asked, and then very luckily trick my wife into taking it. I then had to figure out how to avoid having sex with her for 3 days while on vacation. (2 days and counting so far).
I am new to mongering and was having a great time. But this has seriously put a damper on my mongering attitude. Getting my wife caught up in an STD is waaaay more than I EVER bargained for. This could have potentially caused me a divorce. It's just not worth it.
I guess CBJ's, and an almost sterile attitude about touching could have prevented this. But where's the fun in that?
Anyone have any advice or comments.
I'm at a loss. And praying that either my wife didn't get infected or that the Cipro works.
Do I just chalk this up to "luck of the draw".
(You lay down with dogs. You just might come up with fleas).

ref.: Cautionary Tale
I recently got sumthin from a BBBJ. NGU, (Non Gonococcal Urethritis.) Several types of germs cause NGU, the most common and serious is chlamydia. (Is that the Clap?) Took about 2 weeks to clear up. I got it from a swing party, not a GDP, and while not in Rio. It's similar to a urinary track infection.
Mrblackluv, have you been in the Hotel's pool? A long time ago I got an infection after going to a public pool. You could try that one on the wife. If she knows, you've been to Rio though, she may act suspicious. (1+1 = 2)
I agree with you on the CBJ, and sterile touching. NO Fun there. But you married with chillin, and extra precautions are warranted.
You also have to be careful in self diagnosis and medicating. If Cipro does not cure it, it may make whatever you have more resistant and require stronger antibiotics. Best to get tested. (I never knew about NGU before this.)
Best of Luck.

Mongers-
I would not recommend that you take Cipro for the Clap (which is better known as Gonorrhea). You would be much better off taking either Amoxicillin or Cephalexin which are much less harsh on your system and would take care of the problem within a few days. Cipro should really only be used for serious issues such as Typhoid or other serious gastrointestinal infections.

cipro
As of 2006, the CDC no longer recommends cipro and other Fluoroquinolones for gonoccocal infections in the U.S., I don't know if that also goes for being infected in South America.
How did you trick your wife into taking the pill? Doesnt the pill say Cipro right on it?
I can't give out too many details. You never know who might read this.
But No, it doesn't say Cipro. It says Bayer on one side and I think 2500 on the other.
I wasted 2 pills with my first attempts. Let's just say crushed Cipro pills are extremely bitter. The one that worked was not crushed. And late at night.
I also found out about Cephalexin. Unfortunately it's only available via injection. I got one of those in Mexico as well. I am now clean, and I don't know which drug worked.
I will basically have to have sex with my wife again and see if she re-infects ME. If that happens I will have to fess up. And will probably be looking for a new place to live.

Cipro for long term treatment (more than 10 days) may cause ulcerative colitis as well as developing resistant strains of microorganiisms and some people may develop severe allergic reactions to the antibiotic, but as a single dose, the probability of any problems is reduced. Azythromycin has far fewer adverse reactions and allergic reactions are virtualy non existant.
I would recomend taking 2 Azithromycin 500 mg(Azitromicina) tablets (1 gram total) and 500 mg Cipro (Ciprofloxacilina), after discontinuing exposure, or on leaving Rio. Works great as a combination for Clamydia and Gonorhea, as a single dose treatment. Clamydia can be contracted by females from contact with infected surfaces or towels, on rare ocasions, but very hard for a guy to explain, how he contracted it other than by sexual contact. The pool explanation seems far fetched, but might work in a pinch.
There is a project in the works to forbid the sale of antibiotics in Brazil, without a prescription, which will be retained by the Pharmacy.

You'd recommend? You an MD? Why not a shot of Zithromax, and/or some vibramacina? Have a physician look at whatever ails: its your body and quality of life. Be sure to somewhere keep a written documentation of when and what meds you take. It is something that happens to everybody at some point -- even if you go through life with a rubber on.

Self treatment
Not all STDs are curable with antibiotics. It is always best to get a professional check up, now and after a few months. Sometimes symptoms can go away but the underlying infection remains, you think you are cured but you are not.

Sticker Shocked in Rio
Gents,
I was in Rio over the easter weekend this after a 2 year haitus. Just to put things in perspective, before the financial melt down in 2007 and its attendant effects, I used to visit Brazil and rio about 4 to 5 times a year.
My flight on AA from Jfk to Rio was uneventul except that most of the flight attendants seemed to be older than my grandmother and just as grumpy in attitude. Arrived Rio thursday morning 4/1 about 1:30 pm and took that Real bus for R$8 to Copa. The bus made 2 stops in centro and I was a the door steps of Hotel Praia Lido inside of 1 hour. Not a terrible value compared to R$45 to R$55 for taxis.
Hotel Praia Lido like every other establishment has increased prices for its rooms. I took a suite on the 5th floor for R$220, it used to cost me R$170. Cleaned up and took a nap after check in and was ready for action by 7 pm.
On the way to Balcony I was propositioned by two beauties. They quoted me R350 a piece. I told them in porto that I was not sucker and they promptly came down to R$300 and would not bulge. I simply walked away.
The talent level in Balcony at 7pm was not good but improved greatly after 10pm. Met up with another American from boston and we hit it off even though i'm a die hard yankees fan (word up Red sox!!). We took a table inside and ordered the big beer dispenser (R$53). Balcony is a rip off with beer prices. A bottle of Skol is $6.50.
The free beer attracted a great deal of attention from the gdps. I talked to a number of girls and inquired about prices and the lowest was R250. One girl told me she had fucked a european that afternoon for R$500. As I was still not fully recovered from the long flight I took a nice morena for R$250 at 1am and decided to call it a nite.
Did not realize that friday 4/2 was a national holiday and everything was shut down, offices, cambio, shops. I was forced to change money at the hotel at R$1.70. The cambio across from the hotel gave me R$1.81 on thursday. BTW all the termas were closed on friday.
Decided to take a walk on ave atlantica towards help in the afternoon. Stopped by Meia Pataca, no action at 3pm. Ho Beach same. At Ho beach I was approached by Paulo the black beach tout who told me he had girls. I pretended I was a newbie and took a look and there was not much there. There were maybe three girls and none higher than a 6. I inquired about chair and umbrella prices and of course he inflated them as much as he could (small chairs R$12, umbrellas R$10). You can tell from my tone that I despise this guy. During my first visit to rio a while back this guy took me for R$80 for a few drinks, my and a girl's chair and umbrella. When I called him out and threatened to call the police I was advised by another american against as Paulo could easily harm me in rio.
I was back at Balcony on friday evening. Again a lot of girls asking R$350 to R$400 for 2 hours. I was content in playing the waiting game and by midnite the prices had gone down. I took a petite blond home for R$250 and it was well worth it.
In summary Balcony and Dolce Vita is where most of the action is these day. Most of the girls here are former help girls and all seem to have this inflated view of their worth. That being said bad service and attitude in rio would rate an A in new york any day.
Ciao.
