Today I had another visti from our old friend WR. This time he showed up with a long time fav of this group. Miss N.

FMTT: Eid declared LAST night. So it's a 4 day holiday, not 5. Figures!

One thing that HASN'T changed is Satwa. As bad as I remember - WORSE. Thursday night, the streets are aswarm with people. Think 'kicking over an anthill'. Traffic a nightmare on the 2 lane access road. She's told me where we'll meet as if I'm familiar with Satwa; I'll just be content to make it to [i]Satwa center[/i]. Several phone calls of the 'where are you?/stuck in #@$?#@ traffic' variety.

Finally get to the center parking lot. So much for easy parking - it's swarming with cruising cars - waiting to park, waiting to leave, double parked, prayer time... How it doesn't completely grid lock is a mystery to me.

Now the subtle change to the phone calls: 'where are you/I'm here/I can't see you'. FMTT. It takes 10 minutes for her to find me (I KNEW THAT would be a problem - forgot to bring the stobe light for the car top). By now, my blood pressure is over 200. Icing on the cake - can I drop gf at the Fairmont?... If Budha was right, I'm hoping to come back as an ant, NOT as a dxb taxi driver...

Walking in the front door, what a relief!!! Just confirms my Thursday night policy.

Lesson learned: if she says "Satwa", she comes to you.

But more seriously, as traffic keeps getting worse could we see a partitioning of the market across geographic lines? (or should we say lanes)

Or maybe this is part of an evil plot to sanitize the more tourist oriented areas (i.e. Marina) from the not so politically correct "old Dubai"? Will we be forced to choose between uncensored access to the net and uncensored access to the girls?

Even though it wasn't daylight, it was a Thursday night, Satwa, end of Ramadan (if you don't live here, you won't understand).

Every taxi I saw was occupied, with LONG lines of people standing on curbs trying to flag them down. Might be a LONG walk to Al Wasl road, but that would have to be the best bet. If I was a taxi driver, I would NOT venture into that nightmare, the "not moving" increments of the meter just not worth it, along with the "non-preferred" clients (not too many tourists in Satwa).

Another reason a girl prefers to be picked up rather than take a taxi ride is when she's on the way to the office, she most always has co-workers with her (safety in numbers). Coming your way, most likely alone (well, at least for me; Zing UK another matter :)). Girls can pick up a lot of harassment, unwanted attention, drivers TRYING to rip them off as they think the girl doesn't know the way, etc., etc.

Plus no problems with LE if she's in the car with you. Taxis not often stopped, but it can happen. I've been surprised at some of the girls (very popular, good english) who asked me to pick them up (at least they lived in an easily accessed area), even when a taxi was easy to find and I'd said I'd pay for it. With you driving, they can relax and feel safe; taxi driver, always have to be on-guard.

If they say they live in Diera, that IS a factor in the go/no-go decision process; they need to be willing, and able, to take a taxi.

I have been privy to many "one sided conversations" and they never cease to amaze me. Are people really that thick? Can they not catch the drift?

Anyone doubting the general taxi problem should pop down to the lower level of the Diera City Centre, and check out the line of 150 people waiting for a taxi. Thus used to be only on weekends, but now is an everyday occurance.

My old haunts at the Sofitel had to put up a sign in front saying "Hotel guests have priority" since so many people had discovered the shorter queue.

I would not dispute almost ANY taxi horror story.

The only thing that keeps me from hating the taxis is seeing, and understanding, the truly shitty circumstances the drives work under.
In the last six months, there has been a marked upturn in questions from taxi drivers. The "where are you from?" is always followed by a "can I get a work visa for there?"

Everyone is getting tired of DXB I fear.

Yep, on the other hand it seems the next wave of workers may be coming from Central America... this is totally based on anecdotal evidence and it may turn to be total crap. However, if my sources are right, we may see an influx of Central American workers over the next few months to replace at least partially the current groups. It may be the case that DXB reputation has, finally, been burnt at least for low-skilled workers.

If this happens to be true, we may start seeing "chicas" soon. I may start some online course "Spanish for punters"... I need to think of the home exercises for he students :)
