Class-ism Exists In Colombia
I was wondering about estrato's in Medellin. I believe that they go from 1 being the low income, up to 6 being the high income. My question is, are estrato's talked about in normal conversations or is it best not to ask people about such things?
It's probably better to just ask what area of the city they live and work but that's my North American brain working and I'm just trying to learn about Colombia and her people.
To answer your question, class-ism, if that is a word, exists in Colombia and is similar to racism. May sound odd, but lots of upper class Colombians (Estrato 6) look down on the the poorer living in the barrios that are Estrata 1 and 2. When you sign up with Claro for cable, they have a tiered payment schedule with the same for EPM for utilities. A few years back I looked at property to buy located in Poblado and the real estate agent brought an attorney and when I asked him about something in Bellen, he made a reference that they were a bunch of low life's living there. And a few years back when I was with one of my Chicas in Provenza, I was introduced to a Colombian couple. And when they asked where my Chica lived and she told them in a barrio called Paris they gave her the cold shoulder. What I experienced was an eye opener for me but not surprising. So unless your good friends with a Colombian, I wouldn't be asking much about it, but typically where they live in the City will be a good indicator. Basically the wealthy are helping to subsidize the poor in Colombia based on their Estrata system.
