Places to stay for Carnival
well i have purchased my ticket to go to salvador for carnival this year but i am having a hard time finding a decent place to stay that is not going to [CodeWord123] me in cost. i read a while ago that there always seem to be apartments and such available for carnival last minute because people ask too much up front. so i am hoping to find something.
so has anyone had any luck in getting a place at a decent rate? i am looking for a fairly nice place and i am willing to pay fare value but the rates they are asking for carnival are over 10x.
if anyone has any recommendations or contacts this would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,

Some things to think about
Thanks Mercenario for your thoughts.
Even though I am here posting on ISG, this trip is my first to Brasil, so I want it to be more than just chasing beautiful bunda. That's why I am interested in Salvador.
The "safety' issues is a very controversial one. Many people talk about Salvador being less safe than Rio, but your experience is the opposite.
Oh by the way, I will be going in May, not March, so the weather is not great in Salvador according to the weather websites.
1st safety: How many people get murdered in Rio every day? Some 25! While I was in Rio in April/May 2005 for some weeks, there were two tourists murdered. I have never heard, that a tourist was murdered in Salvador. Rio is the capital of the narcotics mafia, only Sao Paulo is worse.
2nd culture: There is much more culture in Salvador than in Rio. Alone visiting the 10 most popular and famous churches takes a lot of time and you will shoot many pics. Also popular music styles in Rio and Salvador are quite opposite. In Rio they prefer something which sounds like brazilian rap (forgot the name) in Salvador the prefer Samba-Raeggae (I hope you know what I mean).
3rd weather: Definitely May has many rainy days in Salvador. Also Rio has rainy days but less.
Cheers!
