These include covering your skin as much as possible -clothes wise, using mosquito repellent ointments on exposed skin and staying indoors (with aircon and / or using mosquito nets) whenever possible, essentially do all that is possible to avoid mosquito bite as mosquito is the only vector.

Some insect repellent would be your best bet, with closed / screened windows at night.
I was talking to a long time amiga who has the virus. She is young and vibrant. The virus has her almost bed ridden. She says her whole body hurts. Getting this would be a bit of a night mare for us older guys.

I'm flying back down in 2 weeks, my last visit about 2 months ago, the mosquitoes ate me up. This thing seems to be widespread I'm crossing my fingers on this one.

Slip on Me is in a building on George Washington in Santo Domingo. It is actually an apartment. Do a search. I reported about it over a year ago.

If you have a US cell phone, it may not be worth getting a DR phone, especially if you just visit now and again. Here are some alternatives:
1. Ringo, a downloadable phone app that you can use to make calls to DR cell phones from the US for 7. 5 cents per minute. You can make calls without a data connection or wi-fi, but you can't make calls from inside the DR. The phone you are calling does not need a data or wifi connection.
2. Viber, a downloadable app that you can use to make free calls from the US to the DR, but you must have a data connection and the phone you are calling must have one too. You can also make these calls from inside the DR if you have a data connection in your hotel or at a restaurant.
3. Skype, you need a data connection or wifi and you can call DR cell phones for 16 cents per minute pay as you go, or 10 cents per minute if you buy a 120 minute package. The receiving phone does not need a data or wi-fi connection. You can also make calls from inside the DR if you have a wi-fi connection, for example in your hotel or in a restaurant.
4. Spaxtel, downloadable app can make calls from the US or inside the DR to DR cell phone numbers for 17 cents per minute. However you either need a wi-fi connection in the DR, or else the app needs to be able to send an SMS message to get the call initiated. If you have an ATT phone with no overseas calling or roaming plan an overseas roaming SMS call will cost you 50 cents per message, so your call from DR to DR will cost you 50 cents plus 17 cents per minute, which comes to a dollar for a 3-minute call.
Conclusion: If you are not making a large volume of calls in the DR, a combination of one or more of these apps may be all you need with your US phone. Beware however of receiving calls while roaming if you have no roaming plan, as this will get very expensive. You can also make or receive roaming calls in the DR on ATT without a plan, but this will cost about $2. 50 per minute. So you might want to use this for an occasional emergency call or to let someone know that you just arrived at the airport, but it is best to keep the roaming turned off when you are not using it for an outgoing call.

I'll be landing at punta cana at 2:30 pm this Friday, what's the best way to get to santo domingo? I looked at a hire car but it's $100 extra to drop the car off in santo domingo the next day. Only want to head to santo domingo, then book a hire car whilst I'm there if I feel the need to.

I will be in SD on the same day. Its a 3 hour 15 minutes ride. I think a bus leave at 4:00 pm that will be excellent timing for you.
