Hi, I'd like to know if the area where is Hotel Travel is a good area for picking up girls .... of course besides the Hotel Travel. In that area is there some hotels for sleeping in the night?

thanks
And 'where is' Hotel Travel located? Anyone know the street name or location?
Thanks for your post. What you described is not normal behavior at Kartika, and the tip amount has definitely not gone up to 200,000 rupiah! My guess is that you ended up with one of the few bad/greedy girls working there, who must have been having a bad day or severe financial pressures in her life.

Whenever a situation like this happens, don't be afraid to complain to the mamasan (as you did) - they will usually do their best to fix the situation. I've visited Kartika at least 70 or 80 times over the last five years, and only had one experience as bad as yours. I immediately complained to the mamasan and they waived the room fee on the spot, without my even asking. Not only that, when I came back 5 days later, I learned that that particular girl was no longer working there, that Kartika management had fired her. I'm not sure if that was a direct result of my complaint, or if several customers had complained, but the bottom line is that no place will put up with girls who hurt business.
Dear MS,

thanks to your reply I was encouraged to give Kartika another chance, and fortunately my previous reported "happening" turned out to apparently (and fortunately) be an unlucky day for me.

Happy things remained as I remebered.
I dropped by the reception when I was there in April, the price 325k IDR+17. 5%.

I did't look at the rooms though.
Perhaps a useful tip (just my 2 cents worth):

When you arrive in Jakarta go to a bookstore in any of the malls and buy a city plan. Falkplan is by far the best and comes with an interactive CD (handy if you have your laptop with you). Not exactly cheap: approx. 200, 000 Rp but unbeatable in accuracy. The CD has a search function for just about everything (hotels, streets, malls, you name it). No, I do not have shares in Falkplan.

Second place goes to the Periplus street atlas. Cheaper, bus less detailed and does not have a digital version included.

Most taxis know it anyway. But you can just tell them Manga Besar 8. (Mangga besar delapan)

You're right about JJ's although my main memory of that place is getting my credit card cloned. I'm surprised you didn't mention Tanamour however which I think is somewhat more noteworthy even that JJ's! It's the first club I went to on my first night in Jakarta 18 years ago. Having managed to avoid a few lady boys the like of which I'd never seen before, I went home with a girl 20 years younger than I’d had for 20 years....

Spark hotel 45 USD just around the corner at mangga begsar

Olympic hotel 35 USD inside lopasari plaza across from spark hotel

Mecure reska 55 USD nice 3 star hotel about 15 min walk

Fast Eddie 48

The last one I bought was the interactive Megapolitan Map & Street Guide. I paid 20K for the copy in Mangga Dua Mall but I'm sure Ratu Plaza, Mal Ambasador and the like will have it too. Very detailed one also!

Tanamur was great fun indeed. I think that it's also the first place I've ever been to in JKT. This was the pre-internet days and there was no way to know where to go when you arrived at destination, except by word of mouth, and Tanamur already had a solid reputation. Atmosphere was so good that I had one of biggest shock of my life ! Anyway for me JJ had more charm ...the balinese backyard, the outdoor billiards and MTV screen, the baroque decoration, and the elegance of the old dutch mansion that hosted all that was a great blend indeed. And most girls were NOT interested by your wallet, but just to have hot and short flings with equally fun-loving foreigners. I think I've spent hundreds of nights there !!!

BTW ..... who remember that JJ was in the late 80s, after its opening, the trendiest place in town, packed with celebrities, models, jeunesse doree, ect .... they abandonned it after a few monthes (which is usual in JKT), until it became soon the place that we know, the best pick up spot and drinking hole (under one roof) on the planet, till 2002 when it went really downhill.

My current hunting ground is FSU and more specially Uzbekistan, but I have LOT of nostalgia for Indonesia. Gotta leave the russian dyevs for a while to taste again indo flavor. :)

... are they ever "off the market" was the main point of the note I couldn't send you

Just finished an interesting chat with an online friend in Jakarta. She had been corresponding several months with a guy from the UK. This guy had been buttering her up for several weeks.

Anyway, he was scheduled to fly form LHR to SIN and then onto CGK with Singapore airlines. She was looking forward to picking him up, and meeting him “in real”.

A couple of hours before he is scheduled to land, she receives a phone call from an official at SIN airport customs. The guy has been detained coz he is carrying too much cash. He has to pay a fine of 2800 USD in order to be released.

She sends the money via western union to the person calling her on the phone. He then calls her to say he has been released, but he cant touch the money, he wants send it to Malaysia by courier, for her to pick it up for him, coz SIN will not allow him to continue his trip, he must return to UK.

She then gets a call form a Malaysia number, saying the bag full of money is in KL, and she should come get it, but she must pay 4800 USD in fees for transport and security. She tells them she cannot come up with that money. The friend then calls and begs her. He is in jail at SIN airport. She tells him she will try to come up with the money. Somehow she manages to come up with 3,000 USD, and calls the “Malaysia agent” who informs her that if all she has is 3,000, she can just send it, and not bother to come. They will then return the bag to her friend.

Finally, it rains a little bit of brain on her, and she calls her uncle in Singapore who tells her to not send money. He makes a few calls, and of course, all is bogus.

Cut a long story short, she is out 2800 USD, and the guy has not shown up.

Any of this actually true, or just another story or woes, in order to extract some sympathy and a little cash from the bule?

The scam, or a variation of it, is very common, how many are hooked is impossible to say but it seems to be getting more prevalent.

The MO is always similar. A girl on an online chat site is hit upon, often by a guy who puports to be from UK, Australia, USA etc. He spends a period of time, usually a few weeks, flattering, developing the relationship and assessing his targets financial worth. Single working women, 30+ with middle and up income are often targeted. Just like us mongers, the scammers know this group is often grateful for the attention.

Then comes the hit. Common variations are the unsolicited gift to the lady (diamonds, cash) which is sent by some fictitious but plausible sounding courier and the 'stuck in transit' line you described.

Either way, the girl is asked for customs or other fees to release the gift or for cash to help her wealthy new friend. Fees to be paid by Western Union and subject to heavy discounting if the target baulks at the initial amount.

The majority of the fund requests are from Malaysia. Targets could be anywhere but Singapore, Thailand, China and Indonesia are popular.

I know a girl or lady who had organised her engagement with one of these scamsters. He came up with some story and she went to Malaysia to rescue him before the engagement and got money given to guys who posed as cops. She announced a great engagement in a 5 star hotel, all with a fantastic agenda. And this guy, a self proclamed Britisher does not turn up. And then she never heard of him again. Finally she married an aged bule from Indonesia and has now settled in Connecticut.

Just visit www.scamorama.com and you will find all types of scams that can happen around the world.

Cheers

I've been in jakarta for 3 days now. It's been a joy so far except for one little disappointment.

As usual, I surveyed the forum two weeks in advance. And was drawn to the idea of online dating. So I signed up with two websites recommended here. Met few girls online but got much involved with a pretty girl. So I focused my attention to her and neglected the others as I didn't really have much time to spare anyway. So, we exchanged phone numbers. Talked few times on the phone. After arriving to Jakarta, and settling in the hotel, I gave her a call and planned to meet her in Mulia so we can spend the night in CJ. She arrived. Dressing elegantly. Smelling heavenly. We sat down in the lobby for few minutes and talking. I received my biggest shock. When she said: by the way baby, you know I am ladyboy right?

For what felt like ages, a flashback of events raced through my mind. I have to say that this forum. And in particular some prominent members (whom I could remember at that moment) received a shower of curses.) damn what a shock. What a shame. Those bastard in the forum didn't warn us (newbies) about this LOL. Anyway, I tried every trick in the book to get away from that date as quickely and nicely as possible. But it was heartbreaking. Needed few hours to recover and forgive you guys (grin).

Anyway, reporting on some of the things that I've experienced so far.

CJ: as trendy and classy as it was built up in here. Loads of girls and freebies. Nice music. A bit pricy I must say. Girls don't approach you most of the time so you have to get up and approach them. And expect some rejections as well. First girl I approached, was tall (about 180 cm, thin, and elegant). We chatted a bit, ordered her a drink (long island ice tea she was drinking!). Anyway, once it got a bit serious, she told me she want 1 mil. I offered 400 and negotiation started. Ended up agreeing on 500k. Once we are back to my hotel. Action started. She was nice, warm, and extremely horny. Started with a nice and wet BJ (no condom) and then moved to a doggy style. (condom – I asked for it and she said she doesn't have so I grabbed my own). Anyway, CJ is good. If you have loads of cash. But if staying for a longer period. It might seriously damage your wallet.

Stadium: Again, as usual, however I noticed that about 80% of the crowd is locals including girls and boys. Is that always the case? Or is it the low-season affect? Anyway, if you are not into drugs, I don't think stadium suits those who like to drink and dance. For picking up girls, yes. You can find stunners in there.

I am still in Jakarta, will stay here for two more days, will write more detailed reports once I get back home.

By the way guys, I was trying to find a good massage place where they do the soap massage (thaildand style). I read that I can find this in Kartika. But I found out that Kartika is about 1 hour away by taxi!, can anyone recommend any other place as I am staying in Acacia hotel currently (not sure why!). Which is located in Jl Karamat Raya No. 81. Hope the experts know where that is.

Ciao

The last half of your last paragraph is the answer I think even though there are "real" scams like this. I'd file it along with the cousin/brother etc who needs school fees, the sick relative, the parent whose died three times already....
