Well WR, as you point out, I'm older, and therefore more crotchety and less charming than you, though far better looking.
I don't go often to Cebu, as you know, so I don't know many of the hotels there, but, as I like my creature comforts,
It's certainly not a terrible place...it was clean, it had free Internet, and the rooms, though cheaply furnished, were habitable.
I just prefer places with better service, but then as you know, I'm spoiled, fussy, and cantankerous, as well as old. .

I would agree with what you say...well most of it (you know am the more gwapo :D)).
And i would stay Marriott if on expenses as the Club area is very nice, free food and you could feed yourself happily there if you did not want to venture to the Terraces etc to eat. Not sure if free internet.
Marco Polo is nice but too fsar from town for me
Spoiled, fussy, cantankerous? You? .......see you soon old man :D
I'll probably be remembering the Park Lane tomorrow night with a certain degree of nostalgic fondness, as I contemplate my room at the Garden Orchid Hotel in Zamboanga. Luxury and even comfort are, I guess relative to the situation in which one finds himself. Given that the only edible thing on the menu for me at the Garden Orchid is chop suey, I probably also won't be so quick to condemn the soggy, under cooked monte cristo that I ingested at the Park Lane.
I think, when it comes to travel in the PI, there probably are no absolutes. See you soon WR.

Thanks for the counterpoint, WR. I guess I'm biased in favor of the PI because I lived there 25 years ago (former XO of Clark AB)
A bit off topic. When I was stationed on Okinawa in 1984-86, I got down to Clark AB every chance I could and a again for a month in 1987(wife hunting, btw found a syt from Manila, married over 20 yrs). I was a single TSgt with money to burn so AC was the perfect place. I found Clark well run and efficient. Hated to see it close.

i've got to agree with good enough's assessment of the parklane.
i wish i'd read his report prior but following all the good mentions here decided to give it a whirl.
first impression of the room was 'what a dump' and it went downhill fast from there.
in rough order, no hot water, toilet didn't flush and other lack of quality issues.
nothing like finishing off a couple of flights with a maintenance guy crawling around in your hotel room while you're in it.
over and over again.
requested new room but told their weren't any until the next day.
then woken up in the morning by people nailing carpets outside.
warning they've got internal maintenance in progress now. which is why somehow they'd unhooked the water to my room.
paid $ 78 i think on expedia but value it at about $35-45 at best solely based on the breakfast buffet i didn't eat.
memo to the parklane, hot water and flushing toilets aren't accessories.
couldn't get out of their fast enough. moved to better hotel for therapeutic value and flushing toilet.
a question, why is toilet paper like gold in the philippines? i always forget when i first arrive to cart a sixpack around for emergencies.
on the positive side, and back on topic for this board decided not to go that first night due to extensive travelling and bad room experience.
put some bait out on dia along the lines of:
badminton instructor.
likes travelling, beaches, farmville, karaoke, endless tv, shopping and helping those in need.
in cebu now. simply simple.
actually the last 2 words i stole off some dia girl's profile.
simply simple. genius! i wish i'd thought of it.
ok so that wasn't the exact profile i used but it could have been as managed an exceptional amount of hits in a short time.
one of the girls who's photo wasn't that flattering started chatting away late at night and i agreed to meet her in the morning.
she turns up at ayala with her cousin who looked like her absolute identical twin sister, both in matching tiny blue denim shorts and black tanktops.
both 18, very, very cute and animated about how some old white guys had been following them through the mall. err i'm an oldish white guy, late 40's, but didn't point that out as we had a long meaningful relationship based on about 6 minutes on dia the night before and 4 txts. but every now and then, the mongering god shines down and this was that time.
hit the department store for matching bikinis etc.
(2 bikinis, a set of 6 pairs of underwear, and 2 lingerie things)
about 2, 800 for the lot.
back to new hotel.
excellent. played in swimming pool, played in room.
so if the parklane hadn't have been such a dump, i wouldn't have stayed in rebooking hotels etc, and wouldn't have chatted on dia and got very, very lucky.
cousins. kissing cousins now.
i've got to admit i like cebu for a change of pace. and pleasant suprises.
but the parklane. really not good.
Parnellcat, thanks for agreeing with me. You're obviously a man of refined tastes, and perhaps WR will now reassess his experiences and apply higher standards in the future.
As advertised, I'm now in the Garden Orchid in Zamboanga, and in comparison with your experience at the Park Lane, this place is better: there's hot water and the toilet does work. The food though remains inedible, but at least there's the Japanese place on the ground level that has food I can actually swallow.
The one thing--perhaps the only thing--that Cebu has over Davao is that there are more high quality restaurants, though with the opening of the new Ayala Center in Davao, this too could change. I heard today that a new Marriott Hotel is part of the Ayala Center, so the number of five stars in town will increase from one (the Marco Polo) to two.

LOL GE
We are both stubborn old dogs...well you are a pensioner not a young pup like me.....
PL is a good place and will stay there again..and again...maybe they saw you two guys and thoiught such unrefined gents should be persuaded to stay elsewhere....or they realised you were mates of WR and thought "no more of that sort of kinky man in our hotel"
Either way PL is VFM for me as Marriott while very nice and better is expensive. Issue for me in Cebu is lack of quality of choice of hotels. Mango park is fine if on budget (1200-1400 pesos a night net net) but the internet sucks badly and I need a good (and hoepfully free as in PL) connection due to work, have no choice as you know. The extra I pay at Marriott can be spent on more owrthwhile 'pursiuts'...and I like to see the PL security face as Cebu fav walks through door in morning in school uniform :D..and see another Cebuana in a different uniform wlak back at noon for special education :)
If Marriott charged 2800 pesos a night net net, trust me I would be there and my pocket would be happy. Used to stay there but hotel ahs gor greedy
My standards dropped a long time ago GE (except pussy as you would hopefully agree)...but there are other things that have likely dropped on you :D
Enjoy Zambo...and lets hope BBM works tomororw...rumour now is just BBM not BB...but we will see
Howdy gentlemen....I'm back :) a.k.a born loser 5..last three months were horrible back home in India...will start the new innings from Cebu this time....cant wait to get back to the paradise hehehe :)

Welcome back SC / BL5
Enjoy and hopefully if you are in Cebu when I get there next month we can catch a beer or two
With rather unfortunate timing, so it seems, I made a booking (via Expedia) last week to stay in this "fine" establishment next month just before GE's rather damning verdict.
I'm now having second thoughts ..

I'm now having second thoughts ..
In the same boat here. Booked for 8 nights on Agoda for $72 Nett. Girl I met on DIA (smart, educated, hi-so civil servant) says bad idea. Apparently there are 2 construction sites working 3 shifts a day around it. I'm planning to amend my reservation to 1 night, go to Bohol for 2 (with her), come back and stay at the Marriott. Another DIA girl says she can get good prices and not to worry about internet rate ;)
Oh, how I love DIA!!

Oh dear LOL
If any comfort, GE is a very fussy pensioner who has to be helped from the taxi and escorted to his room by wheelchair :D...
Seriously I have made 3 advanced bookings for the rest of the year. Issue for you is where else to go if you are paying yourself. Hotels of same standard close to Ayala etc can be hard to find. Other are smaller, not as nice, wifi is not free...all sorts.
If your company is paying stay at the Marriott or go further away from Cebu City to Mactan and the resorts there...all very nice but all very expensive IMHO...and you cant walk to Ayala Terraces and sit and enjoy the 'views'
Last time I was at a resort, it was an hour to the PL ..but that was 6.30am in the morning and we had to get back so my lady could get to school
Ask for an even numbered room as well as on the quieter side of the hotel (is not facing the main roads)
I don't know why some of you complain about Parklane. I had no problems with the toilet flushing, It flushed good and had no problems with hot water also. My other friends had no complaints about it either. Each hotel has a certain drawback about them. If you stay at a 3 star hotel like Beverly Boutique on F. Manalo Street, you will see a big difference between this hotel and Parklane. I guess some of you have high standards and never experienced the poor life. My friend who has never been to Philippines before did not come out and say: "Parklane is a dump, why did you book this hotel?" He actually said it was a nice upgrade coming from Diplomat hotel on F. Ramos Rd. Maybe you guys are use to staying at hotels that are really clean or 5 star hotels. PI standards may not up to par from where you came from. But, just be lucky you're not sleeping on the side of the street like some of the local people in Cebu.
If Parklane isn't so good, what would be a good alternative hotel that has in-room safe, mini bar, internet in the room (that's good and not dirt slow), pool, gym, jaccuzi and is in a decent area close to a main mall at a price that is the same rate as Parklane? Marriott? I wouldn't pay more to stay there. Like WR mentioned earlier, I rather save the cost on the hotel and use it for BF or other things. I stayed at 3 star hotels and still had fun regardless. If there's a bed, water and roof over my head, I'm good.
Speaking of construction sites. The Hotel Elizabeth looks like it will open soon in the area between AYala Mall and the St. Moritz Hotel / bar (most undereported go go bar in Cebu by my reckoning).
And the long empty site near SM is also looking to open. I wonder if we will see a drop in hotel prices as all these rooms hit the market?
Hotel E and E mall seem to have a connection. Apparently Elizabeth is the wife of someone connected to USC.
