i live here and i travel back a forth between the dr and la for work. if you plan ahead you can get pretty reasonable flights from la to the dr. i don't do the north coast of the dr that much but, i know you can get some good prices on tickets if you look around. (hell, i am from la also but i am here now and loving it.)

Caribe Tours buses run to Sosua, and all over the island.
Very cheap, and provide a nice view of the island.
They are air conditioned and have bathrooms.
You can look them up on the internet for schedules.

Not sure what air connections exist between Samana and Sosua.

If professional girls are not your first priority, try Las Terrenas.
