Tom Power does Cartagena right
But not everyone does.
I used to be really out-going with fellow gringos in Cartagena now I try and avoid them. It's sad but many gringos show up down here thinking that 200 bucks a day or whatever will be enough and when they realize that the girls won't go for less than 200K the first thing they do is free load off me. Sit in my tent, drink my beers, I've met some real chislers down there, some gringos are worse than the vendedors.
Cartagena is expensive.
Example of a day: see orig postThats 1. 1 million pesos.
This actually sound like my budget but I spend much more on dinner, more on lunch, more on the room and I go to La Perla.
But for this guy on a tight budget I see:
Beers:
50k for beer and chips for the cooler, ice too. (Thats about 20Beers)
And after drinking 50K worth of beers purchased at the liquor store.
20k for a few more beers at the beach from tony because the coolers empty. A few of those he'll drink on you. (24 beers)
3k for a beer from the urchins. (25)
30k for a few henikens for urself there at 8k a pop. (28 beers)
30k in beers before you find a girl you like. (31 beers)
3k for another beer they're small. (32)
50k in drinks for you and your pizza outside in the jardin and what ever drinks your next broad wants. (not even counting this)
Comment: Not every one buys 32 beers every day. That's 186K in Beers and I'm sure I missed a few
10k for her taxi because no-matter what deal you made she's going to beg for it.
6k for the taxi to the torre reloj in front of tu candela to meet your girl pro, semi or non.
6k taxi to take you and her there.
6k taxi home.
10k in taxi money for her to go home if she's playing innocent girl or go to work if she's a pro and you've already done her.
6k taxi back to laguito and dolce vita.
6k to taxi to your apartment they always ask because its hard walking 2 blocks in heels.
Then a much needed siesta. That's free.
Comment: Taxi to the ATM and back. Why not consolidate a little? Because like me you are not on a budget. Also you got the taxi here for 2 or three different girls or some random massage girl. I lost count.
3k for smokes for her before you enter.
3k for her smokes when she arrives.
3k for her smokes outside.
Comment: The guy is not mongering. If he is maybe he gets a non s moker? Just saying
20k to cover charge so you can hang-out at tu candela for a while / same dif if its Cafe del Mar.
20k for her double shot of what-ever then she vanishes.
3k in go-away money while waking in el centro.
2k in go-away money for the urchins.
Comment: The guy is not mongering. Maybe one night he does this? Just saying.
120k for dinner at Quebracho or Enoteca don't bother with La Vitrola they won't let you in with her. It could be more expensive if you don't steer her away from the langostinos.
Comment: The guy is not mongering. Lobster dinner? Maybe one night he does this? Other nights he eats like a Colombian? Just saying
3k for the Smirnoff Ice in your fridge for her / you got to offer something.
Comment: The guy is on a tight budget. His room does not have a fridge, pobrecito, hehehehe.
Thats 1. 1 million pesos for guys like us. But for him it is 60K COP no woman and 250K total if he throws in a 150K girl, her taxi and a tip. But again he is not mongering. Looking to swoop girls after their shift.
I will say one thing. He might get lucky if he has game but he is in for some real disappointment if he thinks anywhere in Colombia is going to anywhere close to Rio.
Guys who want to get a hotel are dumb not you Tar Heel
I was just lookin at my photos I just posted and it wasn't my intention to call Tar Heel a dummy I was just trying to make an impact on how people always come on the board and ask about getting a hotel vs apartment.
My apologies.
Here's a suggestion Tar Heel maybe you should consider romancing some girl before you get there and spend two weeks making love to her that could really make things affordable, in my experience when you meet a girl down there she's not puttin' out unless you wine and dine her, but if she thinks you love her and are coming to Cartagena for her alone she'll bend over backwards to show you how committed she is to your future together and insn't interesada (gold digger) hell if you lay it on thick before you get there your future mother-in-law will let you move in and skip the hostel she'll cook you meals you could pull-off coming home with money and no headaches on your VISA. If your young and good looking playing the love card is your ace in the hole. Obviously, you won't have a score card like Pauly D, but condom-less sex for hours and hours for pennies out of pocket isn't too bad either.
It is more expensive to marry the non-pro
Tom Power,
I enjoyed the pictures, thanks for posting. I got a couple questions though. Were you calling Juan a dummy? Or telling a dummy to hook up with Juan. Hahahaha. A comma would be helpful, but I knew what you meant. You never really know if a non-pro is really non-pro. Go ahead and approach anyway. I left the beach on several ocassions with women who appeared to be there on a family vacation complete with little kids hanging around. I agree that some of Tony's choices are on the edge, but in the past and most recently in September, he has introduced me to some of the best and energy filled college girls. I keep telling Tony no tto the uglies and he digs deeper and finally will get something I consider spending my time with.
The non-pros can cost you a heck of a lot more than the prepagos. I swear when my wife would show up, my expenses quadrupled. I never can understand how she can take four different trips across town to the mall or our duplex in the same afternoon. Each time more taxi money. Of course she does like to spend her evenings in LaPerla or Rio and if she is up a few hundred dollars, she won't leave until it is all gone. I thought I was going to be divorced by now, but as it turns out, we are heading the embassy next week for her and my step son's visas once again.
The argument over how much to spend while on vacation depends on what one expects on vacation. For some, it means just a room and bed with a bathroom and would not entertain in their room. I am not sure how much entertaing will occur since many of the girls think we are all making seven figures a year. You may enjoy seeing the sights, going to the beach or to the mall. After three days, one could see most of the sights in Cartagena and visit every store in the mall. I admit though, that I enjoy watching people and grab a table and several beers to see what happens. As for the beach, that is not what brought me to Cartagena. I enjoy it, but if it is the beach, I would just go to Siesta Key in Sarasota instead. I do want what comes to the beach, drink and talk to other Gringos, I just do not enjoy the grey sand and plastic floating in the water.
I first came to Cartagena in September 2003 and was lucky to find somebody to take me around the city to places that were in the barrios. Great food, inexpensive rum, people around to laugh at my attempt to revise my high school Spanish. Many are still my friends and I actually ended up marrying that girl I met. She did give up a good job and brought her step son to the US before her mother got cancer and she got homesick. She moved back to Cartagena which is why I see her only when I am in town. It does get expensive to wine dine and take her shopping when I am in town. I would prefer to go to the beach and take an afternoon street girl up to the apartment for a few hours. I can eat one meal a day and later eat a few of those deep fried hamburger filled pastries. A case of beer, water, ice, and coke will make me content.
I have also spent eight grand in ten days because it is easy to do. Most of it was after spending time at the bars (she liked Mr. Babilla) with my wife and her friends. At some point in the evening, there might be six girls drinking from our several bottles of Buchannan. I am a Chivas drinker and keep a bottle hidden in the apartment for myself. There comes the time in the evening, things head back to the apartment and there would be myself, wife and several of her friends back relaxing. More drinking and food needed to cure their munchies. Several times, I have been awaken by two naked women lying between my wife and I asking for money for the taxi and food for their little kids before they head to work. No matter how you think it is a nonpro or it will be a free fuck, it really isn't.
I have never been to Medellin, so I can't compare prices other than what others have written. I must trust what they say. I have been to Bogota on three different ocassions and found that although there are 50K casa girls and other low cost alternatives, the cost of lodging and food will eat your budget quickyly. Also, why go someplace that reminds me of being in springtime Chicago (I love Chicago, so nobody get on my case). You know where it is cloudy and chilly, then rains, more clouds and then some sunshine before it clouds up again. Instead of shorts, t-shirts and suntan lotion, it is long pants and jackets. I am heading to Bogota next Saturday and a hotel room for 6 days will cost close to $900. 00, I spent almost three days working with different apartment agents looking for a place that could accomodate two adults and one teen. I gave up after the best I could get was $170. 00 per day. Of course, I planned it so that I will have the last two nights solo before flying home. I just hope I am not broke by then.
If all goes well and the visas arrive, I will make a return visit, this time back to Cartagena and will have a day or two to hang out by myself. If anyone is in Cartagena around April 15th, let me know.
