Most of the 1000-2000 range hotels don't even bother to do I'd check. ALso if you do online booking, the check ins are more easier.

I always do it and have not faced any problems so far. I always carry my fat laptop bag along with me.

What about hotels like Magrath[ 5K type ] near Garuda mall? Is it better to ask first before check in or you wait till they object as it happened once to me in a hotel in Mumbai. Lot of hard nego was called for. Etc. The girl too would have to display her ID?
