I will be visiting Cambodia for the first time and would like to know should I stay in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. I normally wouldn't have this problem but my wingman was injured at work and cannot make the trip. I will be coming from Pattaya in early may and would prefer flying or the long bus ride but I will do what it takes. Air Asia from DMK to PNH is an option but there are no good ways to SR except the bus or cab which I will be willing to take if it is worth it. There isn't the choices here like Pattaya and being on your own kind of sucks. If you got somebody with you that knows Cambodia then you can have a much better time. Don't get me wrong there's a lot of nice pussy here, but it's not in your face like Pattaya, it's kinda like a treasure hunt.

You can fly BKK-Kuala Lumpur-Siem Reap on Air Asia for cheap. Even with the stop in KL you're talking no more than a couple of hours in the air and a couple hundred bucks.

You can also take the train to from Bangkok to the border (a few hours and a few bucks) , then catch a bus from to Siem Reap after you cross.

Be warned that taking a bus in Cambodia means long rides on old windy roads. Expect the already insanely long trip lengths quoted to increase in actual practice. Not nearly as good as the buses and trains in Thailand. Not recommended unless you have to.

Tuk tuks are plentiful and cheap. Don't worry about it. They are notorious in Siem Reap for charging more since its a tourist center.

If you are white, expect to pay no less than. $50 for usually one pop. I have been with Khmer guys that the same lady tell them $30 for them. All Khmers see westerners as rich. If you end up in PP, send me a PM and I will see if I can be of help.

When I'm in PP, I am usually going from one place to another to another at night, maybe 5 or more rides per evening, and I've always used motorbikes. My experience was that they usually wanted higher fares at night, but the difference was so small that it didn't seem worth haggling over.

For a tuk tuk, I would pay 8000 riel from St 136 to the Russian Market. Start to walk away, and the tuk tuk driver will say yes. You probably should be able to get it for 6000 riel.

Not hard to get the local prices, but I find it distasteful to negotiate for 10 seconds. I just say the fair ex-pat price, and in 2 seconds he will say yes.

Note that the tuk tuk drivers in the prime location might say no to the local price. Just go across the street or 10 meters up to get the local price.

I also would agree on a price before going on the ride. Yes you can hop on and pay the local price when you leave, but why would you want that drama. Actually, many English speaking tuk tuk drivers at the tourist places will say a price before you go.

It is actually safer to take a transport driver hanging out in front tourist spots. They are part of a "team" that owns that spot. Everybody sees them when they leave. More possibility of getting mugged by some strange transport driver that no one ones.

No one knows how to drive in PP, there are no traffic rules, and probably more than half of these guys are sauced. Better to be in something with some walls that can't fall over or run your kneecaps into the side of a car or another moto IMHO. That said, I have taken motos before.

136 bars to 51 on a moto is 2000 riel. 136 bars to martini is 4000-6000 depending on you. If you ask them how much up front like a tourist, they'll ask 1 dollar for the first trip and 2 dollars for the second.

BTW I totally understand your situation and why you do it like that. Nothing wrong with it at all. On a 3 day holiday trip I'd do the same.
