First time DR visitor questions
I am thinking about spending a few months in DR. I am thinking Santiago, Santo Domingo and / or Sosua. I have experience in Colombia, Brazil and Thailand. My Spanish is not great but it works.
1. How is the internet generally? In Peru it gets pretty bad and is unreliable, Colombia has been fine. I do need a reliable connection for Skype and decent speed for work (10 mbps is live able).
2. Anyone know any salsa group classes or tutors in the mentioned city that are good? I feel like Sosua isn't going to have classes, but Santiago and Santo Domingo might.
3. It looks like Uber is available in Santiago and Santa Domingo but not Sosua. Can anyone confirm? I read about people taking motorbikes. I'the rather pay more for a taxi if that's an option (or walk).
4. Sosua: How safe is it walking up Camino del Libre at night? I see some AirBNBs up that way.
5. Any recommendations for neighborhoods to stay in for Santiago or Santo Domingo? I usually stay for a month or so at a time in an AirBNB. I mainly want something that is quiet during the day and has a decent internet connection. Something with day and nighttime food options nearby, and hopefully a building with security. I maybe monger weekly, not everyday / all the time.
6. How is Sosua now with the crack-down?
7. Which city has the hottest girls? .
Sorry if these questions bother anyone. FWIW its kind of hard to review the post history when there is so much argumentation over the appropriateness of questions or responses. So if you would like to complain, I invite you to PM me directly.
Cosmetic surgery / procedures
Since my re-emergence on the scene in DR last year (after a 6 year hiatus), I've noticed its become quite common for the chicas to obtain (or sadly, try to obtain) some form of cosmetic enhancement. Mostly in the ass or waist areas is what I've noticed. And, while I can say it definitely improves how they look walking down the street, some of the scarring once the clothes come off can be ghastly. Like from an episode of Saw or Hostel.
I was just wondering if any of the residents / DR vets / others have any insight as to this turn of events, the conditions under which the girls get these procedures, pricing--just a general overview in how this has become more pervasive in the culture there. I assume most do it as an investment in hopes of either making more money as putas or finding a rich husband. Same as most women elsewhere. Just wondering if it is to the degree that it was / is in, say, late 90's / early 2000's Medellin and Cali, Colombia.
I hope this makes for a good thread!

1. The weekend millionaires are slipping. Instead of making it rain, they're now just fanning themselves with the Benjamins.
2. "migos". Seriously? Can't even spell friends in Spanish right. Learn how to speak the language or they can never move on from Sosua!
3. Or Blackbeard's. Wow they did a great job remodeling the place.
4. Actually I do recognize the chica with the most screen time in the vid. Her IG acct: http://instagram.com/melodivabaez.
The odd charm of the Dominican Republic
It has not been two weeks since I finished my trip to the Dr. It was short but very sweet. It is a place with an odd charm, though it wouldn't seem the likely place for me to get an affinity for. As I was warned here on this forum, things in the DR don't go like you expect them to, about half the time. The country is very inefficient and the people have a different sense of priorities. Go to a cafe and order a cup of coffee and it may be a while before they get around to delivering it. Some would say that is just typical 3rd world, but in Colombia at least, if you order a cup of coffee, they will damn sure get you that cup of coffee and it will be a damn good cup of coffee. Besides, in Colombia, things seem to work out like they are supposed to 80% of the time. People seem to be less poor in Colombia, as well. Perhaps that is because the cost of many things is actually very cheap in Colombia, whereas the DR didn't come off as very cheap compared to US prices. I bought a small bottle of Presidente at a grocery store in Coca Chica when I realized I was paying the same price for a beer at a convenience store in the US. Being on an island doesn't help, as we all should know islands tend to be expensive places. Pure economy is not one of the DR's strong points.
That said, what does the DR have going for it. I had to do a comparison of the mongering destinations I have visited in the past 16 months: Berlin, Medellin, Thailand and the DR. Three continents and an island in the Caribbean. All should have their merits.
Berlin: culture, nightlife, history, brothels, cheap alcohol, excellent infrastructure and public transport, superb freelancers. Yes, freelancers who take their job seriously. No petty haggling. Prices and services set in stone, no unpleasant surprises and no rushing you through the time you paid for. No begging for gratuities. First-world prices and first-rate service. Danke and please come visit me again.
Medellin: Lovely latinas doing dirty deeds, dirt cheap. Bland food but cheap beer. Perfect weather year around. Surprisingly easy to access these days.
Thailand: Monger's paradise with delicious food, abundant beaches and lots of things to other things to do at a price that will make you pinch yourself.
The Dominican Republic? Lots of warts here. Those who have been there know it. Probably more expensive to drink there than in Berlin. Infrastructure issues, with electricity and running water not guaranteed. And the girls are not the beauties you would find in Medellin and probably other points in LA. The do like to hustle you and they expect their propinas. The most untrustworthy I have encountered.
Still there is something about the DR that I like, but can't explain. Now I can understand why so many first world citizens end up being expats there even though I cannot give a definitive reason why. Yes, there is a certain allure to the girls. I won't be the first person to claims that Dominicanas are an acquired taste. However, as I have explained more than once, it only took me about 15 minutes to acquire it. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them, but I still have this urge to get more of them. And that is a dangerous attraction.
