"Climate of fear"?? GMAFB
I think this thing is getting way out of hand. I've lived in Korea for more than 14 years and have visited various RLD establishments over the years, have given my number dozens of times, and have never had problems.
Besides those mentioned above, don't psyche yourself out and stop worrying about those people who are feeding your fears.
Just because YOU have not had a problem, does not mean that you won't or that other people haven't. (I always love the reasoning "Well, it never happened to ME, so it's not a problem")
It's got nothing to do with a "climate of fear". Protect your information with due diligence and there's no reason to "fear" anything. Go around giving your information willynilly and you have no one to blame but yourself IF things go wrong.
Go right ahead and give your number out, I will do otherwise, and we can both be happy with our personal choices. I know and have worked with several officers in the Cyber Crimes division of the police and the Korean division of Interpol, so just because you have been lucky and not been caught in a sting over your 14 years (and you may never be caught in such stings) doesn't mean you shouldn't keep your info close to the vest.
Throwing your information around while you are knowingly breaking the law is stupid, regardless of the likelihood of you actually getting caught. What you call "feeding his fears", I call "being cautious".
