Hello everyone!
As an American who has made a few trips to Thailand and the Philippines over the years, I am making my first trip out to Phnom Penh. I am definitely more of a budget traveler and was wondering if you guys could recommend a few good places to stay that is within reasonable distance of the action and affordably priced. I am not really looking for any bells and whistles, such as a pool, hot tub, etc, but just a place that is clean, safe, has a good reputation (I. E, not out to rip off foreigners). The one thing that might be nice (but not required) would be wifi.
Also a few other quick questions:
- At the airport is it safe to take any of the cabs and just direct them towards my hotel? Is there anything else I should know to prevent getting ripped off? I believe the fare should be about $10 USD?
- Should I bring USD or will I be able to reasonably obtain cash from debit cards and ATM machines there? If I bring USD, where would I / should I be converting the money to KHR?
- Is there anything else that I should be very aware of for safety or to prevent getting grossly ripped off (I mean hundreds or thousands, not a few dollars here and there)? I've traveled around and am reasonably street smart, but just want to make sure I have my bases covered.
Sorry for all of my newbie questions! Any suggestions you guys have would be greatly appreciated!
MEOW!
Good God man. You are an embarassment to your country. You want to know where to get a pedicure?
Did you ask your mommy what to pack?
PP is a major tourist destination. Be a man. Go there and experience it and figure it out yourself.

Yes $10 will get you a cab (probably start the negotiation at 5 and hope for 8) , if you want to save a couple bucks you could walk just out of the airport and get a tuk tuk depending on how much luggage you have.
What I did was find a tuk tuk that spoke good english and told him my requirements for a hotel and that I'd give him a dollar if he knew of one, I ended up at "white river guesthouse" which was $15 a night, the wifi was pretty bad though, they have a newer one "white river guest house 2" that is about the same price that might be a little better, and is slightly closer to the mongering action, try and stay somewhere on street 172 so you are close to walkabout / pontoon / sorya mall / many other bars.
Other hotels I've heard of are comfort star 2, paris, and blue tongue but its only 2nd hand info that they are good (little more expensive then white river I believe)
Everything is done in USD you don't need to worry about riehl, you will get USD out of the ATMs and pay for your hotel and food or motorbikes with USD, so basically that question is a non issue, but use canadia atms if you can as they charge no fee's on their end even if using a foreign card.
If you can handle PI you will be fine in cambo as far as scams, I guess the only thing to be on the lookout for is don't take a girl thats too young.

A little harsh?

Airport cabs are fine, its US$9. Your going to a normal Asian country, not the wild west. ATMS are fine just like in any normal country. Blue Tongue hote was fine, right next ot Walkabout. Next time I would stay closer to river, but its only a 15 minute walk frrom one side to other. Its a totaly normal place, nothing unusual about it at all. Relax and enjoy. Thousands of other tourists visit there too.

(2) take CRISP BRAND NEW USD in small AND large bills.
(3) PP is very safe as long as you stick to the usual farang areas AND stay away from jail-bait

Back in town
Arrived about 1pm on a bus from Siem Reap. We left there at 6:30am this morning. Settled in and went to the Walkabout Bar. Met, Poa. 32, I know. Hag shag! Enthusiastic, energetic, a pleaser. BBBJ, photos, no rush, short time. $20. And she was very happy for the work. I was talking to another girl, but when she acted spoiled and slapped my arm. Time for me to just go to the next one.

Martini Bar
I forgot to mention that I swung by the Martini Bar around 9:30pm or so. They were closed.

Ripped off at Street 172
Stay away from the pink light places on this road. They are working together and will rip you off. Paid 30 for massage and then no massage and no anything. 5 minutes later I'm out the door with no money. These are the old 63 places.

Where on Street 172 are they? The stretch nearest the Kandal market is very family orientated, full of restaurants and guesthouses.
Why did you part with $30 for a massage? Typically in Phnom Penh a massage ranges from $2. 50-$9 for an hour's oil massage.
Did they say they were going to give you 'extra services' before you parted with your money?
Usually you just pay the $8 or so, and then negotiate any 'extras' directly with the girl. These extras are usually $10 for a hand job and $20-40 for sex in the barang-style massage places.
If the place you went to was a brothel, why did you pay up front?
and stay away from jail-bait
how? is it enough to check birthdate in i'd card? how often fake ids are used by **** girls? how often they use someone else's ids? how many non-**** girls don't have ids? do they need ids to enter hotels in cambodia?

Names of Massage Places
Hey there AussieGuy,
I live in PP (for 5 years now) and have tried many "straight" massage places near riverfront and over in BKK and never get a girl to consider even a hand job. The 1 exception is the well known place next to Fish on Sisowath where they all offer that (can't remember name?).
Anyway. Can you provide some names (and locations ideally) where you have been offered "extras"? Not brothel type fish bowl places ("Soul", etc.) but "straight-looking places" with regular looking girls. I like that set-up sometimes over the obvious. More "surprising" in some ways.
I'm sure many on this board would appreciate your sage advice and considerable experience.
Thanks!
I am reading you right? You can't get a HJ at a MP in BKK (you mean Bangkok)?
I think he means BKK1, a residential area of Phnom Penh.
I'm not a frequent user of massage places to get 'extras' as I reckon they are overpriced for what you get. I'm sure others can produce lists of MP's that definitely do extras.
Sokuns Place near St 108 on Sisowath, Panda Professional corner of 240/55, Khmer Massage on 242/55, You & I Massage on Sisowath (some girls) are a few that I know of. I'm sure there many more. Often it depends how you approach the girls. I sometimes ask them if they massage 'everywhere' before I say yes to a massage, and they will say yes or no.

US embassy
Had only one girl yesterday from the Walkabout. $20, [CodeWord140] poor BBBJ, photos. Nice body and great smile. Performance was so so at best. I was talking to another girl before. She wanted me to feed her first and pay $30. I said no and she walked away. Two minutes later I met the other girl that I eventually took to the room.
Had an appointment for the US Embassy this morning to get additional visa pages added. I made this appointment last week and today was the soonest they could see me. No cameras, no cell phones, x-ray machines, metal detectors, had to leave my bottle of water and cough drops with them. Dealt with three guards at two check points. Then talked to three different ladies at three different windows. Paid the $82 and had to wait 45 minutes. Everybody I dealt with was a Cambodian. The Embassy was like a maximum security DMV. So if you need to go to the US Embassy. You have to make an appointment first.
