I think that Thailand is time wise further away from Ebola in all sorts of senses than other countries, such as many Western countries. You only have to look at the air traffic between Africa and certain countries to see this.
The USA does not plough in large amounts of cash into small African countries for nothing. They want to slow the local epidemic down so as to slow the international transmission down too. The health specialists (WHO and others) no doubt realise that in the early days of Ebola they dropped the ball by thinking it was just something that happens in Africa and is easily contained in villages that were largely self-sufficient anyway. But when Ebola got into cities where people need to go to the market for food, where there is large scale travel, including international travel, the terms of the game changed.
The concern now is that if the authorities in a Western country had to shut down human interaction because of an Ebola epidemic, the economy would tank in such as way as to make the events of 2008 look mild.
