I believe a a bill was passed in June of this year in the House outlawing sex tourism as relates to minors, meaning anyone under 18, but does not address it being illegal engaging prostitutes 18 years or older.

Makes no sense at all to enforce a law against sex tourism when it involves any one 18 or older for a US citizen in a foreign Country where prostitution is legal.

As far as wiping your phone and all your electronics clean I see it as a waste of time. I don't engage in anything illegal when overseas, and don't have any suspicious photos on my phone or computer that might raise a red flag. So if they go thru my electronics and ask me a bunch of questions, my answer will be I have a lot of girlfriends, and they are all over 18. That's the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so as far as lying to a Federal agent I would never do that.

Unless this Trump law you reference specifically states that if someone travels overseas, has photos and conversations with women 18 years and older on their electronics, they've clearly broken the law, and are going to be prosecuted as a sex tourist?

I find this hard to believe, and perhaps your a bit more frightened than you should be about all this.

I'm not suggesting though that you don't do all that you do, because it makes you more comfortable as a monger, and all of us have to be comfortable how we roll.

As far as Tijuana, all of the border agents know exactly what goes on there, and if I was an agent and going thru somebody's electronics, and everything was wiped clean, that would raise a huge red flag.

Going in, the worst I might get is someone who is just disinterested. Sometimes a few basic questions, but never any sort of attitude.

Coming back, I'll occasionally get someone who needs to be certain I'm aware how vital he is to the protection of the US. I just let him talk, answer the questions and go on my way.

I only have had 2 that were on the verge of getting ugly. The first was because I'd had to get a rental truck and the license plate information they sent us for the paperwork didn't match the plate on the truck. More often I get the chance to make a joke. There's a User Fee for trucks entering the US, $13.50. My boss is supposed to pay it in advance, but sometimes he forgets. One day they sent me in to pay and wrote "UF" in big red letters on my paperwork and sent me inside. The woman who I drew asked me why I was there. I told her "The guy out there said I was so ugly I have to pay an ugly fee." She said "How about a User Fee. Is that better?" "It sure is, because I don't think I can afford to be this ugly."

If I can brighten up their day a bit, at the very least it makes me smile. Best case scenario they're happy to see me next time.

I used to be a Tijuana regular, and when asked what I was doing in Tijuana my answer would always be just hanging out. All the border agents know exactly what single males are doing in Tijuana, especially crossing back in the evening. However, I do know a guy a little more brash than you that would always tell the agents he hoped he didn't pick up the clap while in Tijuana.

You never know when you get the power hungry officer. What if you get a female officer. She looks at your WhatsApp and says this girl looks underage. You tell her she is 19. They don't believe you and take you to the back because they think you're engaging in sex trafficking. Remember the new law said Facebook and Craigslist can be held accountable and arrested if someone on their platforms are engaging in prostitution. There are more reports here of extra scrutiny. Without getting into too many specifics, this is beginning to happen more frequently now. A single male traveler with a history of travel to Thailand, Colombia, Cambodia and Costa Rica. Boom - expect to be grilled and have all of your stuff turned upside down. Customs some times take your electronics stuff away for hours, yes plural hours, and inspect it, far away from your eyes.

Don't be stupid. Take care and of course, don't indulge in illegal activities.

I returned with a friend last month who didn't have Global Entry who went thru the same ordeal you did, and the airlines don't like it either when flyers miss their connections. And it's been going on at that airport for months now, you would think they would of cleaned up their act by now.
