Every day in Thailand you can see funny communication stuff ups between Farangs and Thais. Its very evident that tourists seem to speak English as they normally would and expect to be understood. Actually it isn't that easy. Guys should be more careful how they speak English. Choosing simple words, no jargon or slang, and speak slowly. I speak Thai reasonably but still get misunderstood because my pronunciatiation is not perfect and I may say things slightly strangely from a Thai point of view.
If you ask a Thai "please only warm the sandwich a little bit", it will come back burning hot, sloppy and totally destroyed. The only sensible course is to say "No warm please". Thais are not good at reducing unless its something expensive. Its all or nothing. You salad will come swimming in a lake of mayonaise if you ask for just a little. You must ask for mayonaise separate, or better still "no mayo".
In another post Nic had commented to the girl that she was " very special" and she replied "yes special 1500". Funny but demonstrates the communication difficulties and needing to stick to very basic things for Thai people with weak English. In many cases we need to learn the Thai mis-pronunciation of English words too. E. G. In Thailand it's not a Gin and Tonic, its "yeen tonic"
Many times a Thai is trying their best to speak English but due to weak grammar, the meaning is most unclear to me, so I ask them to repeat in Thai to get a clearer idea. Not everyone can do this but its wise to rephrase what they said sometimes to see if they agree we have got the correct meaning.
I understand exactly what you are saying on all levels. And as you have said on plenty of occasions I have been speaking Thai but in their mind they are listening for English so they totally misunderstand. I was at the Nana KFC before leaving BKK today and the lady asked me if I wanted to upsize fries and drink for 20 baht. In Thai I told her no, just give me the drinks with a little ice. When she rung it up to 319 instead of 299 I was baffled. Then I saw the two glasses were bigger than the regular one and one had a little ice and the other had no ice. Huh? All I could do was laugh and go sit down and eat.
As you have also said, I too have found it to work out better for communication when you say things in English exactly as you usually hear them say it instead of the standard way.
