I have been booked in you Sathorn Bangkok. No chance of changing the hotel. Could someone please tell if this is girl friendly? If not then I have no choice but to visit the ST hotels or oilies.

The five-star hotel Grande Centre Point Terminal 21, which is very girl-friendly and conveniently close to Soi Cowboy, offers a room for THB 3200 if you book on the Internet with a credit card, but asks for double if you walk up to the front desk with cash in your hand. Does anybody know a way to get around this rip-off?

I wouldn't call it a scam or rip-off. It's common practice. The "walk up" rate is the hotel's published or rack rate. It's like the sticker price on a new car. You can try and negotiate with the manager, but the best way to get around it is to book on-line directly through the hotel's website, Agoda, Expedia, etc.

A few years ago, I was in New York and booked a deep discounted rate through Expedia. At the end of my stay, I needed to stay two days longer so I called the front desk and the hotel would not honor the discounted Expedia rate. Instead, the hotel quoted me their rack rate which was three times higher than the Expedia rate. I called Expedia and booked for two more nights at the discounted rate. Problem solved!

Nonetheless, there can exist some perfectly legitimate reasons why some people, in certain circumstances, would not necessarily want their credit card to be linked to a hotel reservation. Especially in Thailand. But I'm sure people worldwide have the same kinds of concerns.

So is there any way to combine the privacy of the "walk-up" with the rate of the Internet?

Easy, book on the intenet with a credit card. And if you don't want to "taint" your credit-card with a hotel booking in Thailand, get yourself one of these pre-paid credt cards, they are as good and as anonymous as cash.

Its possible to have Credit Cards or Debit Cards that have online statements so no paper record sent to your home address. So open a new bank account with a secret credit card and online statements.

Use a travel agent to book your Hotel. They can get a better rate like on the internet. Pay the travel agent cash. I used to always use a Bangkok travel agent years ago in Bangkok and could pay them cash.

It really cannot be so difficult, but I have had same experience that offering to pay cash at Hotel reception, the staff are not authorised to give big discounts.

This time I am planning to book Grand Swiss on Sukhumvit 11. Anybody stayed there? Any reviews?

Girl friendly hotel, that time they dint' take ID from ladies, not sure now.

Fingers crossed![/QUOTE]I used Agoda and prepaid my hotels using my credit card, I'm sure you could buy a prepaid card at home and use that to prepay the hotel. If you stay in smaller hotels that don't offer dining or minibars there's no reason they'd need a credit card. My hotel in Pattaya didn't have either of these and never asked for a credit card.
