Thank you Carlos. In your experience, is Barra safe as an area? I read a couple of reports in this forum and others about Barra being an area of backpacker tourists targeted by favelados.
The old city (Pelourinho) is not a good place te stay.
Barra is safe. Just the usual beglars who will annoy you if you wear RayBan sunglasses and a Nike cap. Almost no backpackers in this area.
I you are looking for a place, I would also recommend the Rio Vemelho (Red River) area. This is the rising star, next to Barra.
No go areas are Itapua and Piata. Although they are close to the airport and have the best beaches.

Any streets or parts of these areas I should stay clear of? Also thinking of going to Morro de Sao Paulo for a couple of days, would you recommend flying or taking the catamaran?
Do you know eny girlfriendly posadas\hotels in that area?

I can recommend Alain Zamrini rental services at bahiaonline.net. He's cool and knows why you're coming to Salvador.
I'd rather stay in Rio Vermelho or Ondina.
Succes

GS: Why don't you take the party boat? Booze and party atmosphere included. Transit time is only 30-40 minutes longer than the catamaran and the catamaran ride can be bumpy when you return to Salvador.
Enjoy

If I understand right Rio Vermelho isthe best place to stay? I usualy go to Natal and been there about 7 years in a row, hows salvador compered to Natal? Is there eny place to go in salvador to meet with other "tourists"becouse I travel alone and its always good to meet other people to hang around with.
Hi Tomjoha,
Going on a Monday to the old Cascinha de Siri is a sure bet. All the WG and mongers are meeting there.
During the day you meet gringos at Barra beach. There are not too many foreign mongers in Salvador, mostly local mongers.

Enjoy
The party boat? that sounds good. any info on schedules, where I catch it from?
Thanks
Whens the best time to go to Salvador?
Is it like Natal.
November-mars?
Best travelling time to the north of Brazil is October - March.
Avoid Christmas and New Year, the hotels are charging a premium and the girls are with their families. Carnival is crazy in Salvador - either way it is a life-experience.

There are several options of sea transportation from Salvador to Morro de São Paulo. Lanchas and catamarans leaving from the port behind Mercado Modelo.
There are schooner trips departing from Salvador and Morro. These trips visit beaches along the coast etc. Some have music, food and beer included.
You mean that there is a party boat doing the route Salvador-Morro? It sounds strange to me.
Maybe you are thinking of a one-day trip Salvador-Morro with the catamaran and boarding a schooner when arriving in Morro?
Hi Sperto,
in 2005 we took one of the schooners for a 2-day trip to Morro. It was a package deal with one night at a pousada on Morro and onboard catering included.
If I remember well we booked it at the same counter for booking the catamaran.
