You can ask for hotel discounts, but mostly the prices are already discounted for the season. You may have a better chance of a discount if you stay for a long time, like a month or more.

Yes, you can split between BB and Sosua. I would go to BB first. Not sure I would want a place without A / C at this time of year, though it may be bearable with a good fan and ventilation. Definitely cheaper without A / C.

Yes, you can just swing by BB, but if you take a girl out from there you have to pay extra. As, I said, I would go there first. Anyway, you would not need to "swing by" to get laid. You probably don't need to do much "knocking on doors", because chicas will approach you if interested. You just need to make initial eye contact and smile.

Besides, at present I am still recovering from a recent operation so I am not expending any energy unnecessarily, especially in the present heat and humidity. Just went up three flights of stairs to the roof to hang up the washing, and by the time I got back down my clothes are drenched with perspiration.

Apartments and villas are always negotiable, but for a short trip on your first ever visit I don't think that is the best way to go. You will benefit from mixing with more experienced DR mongers to show you around. Save you precious time and maybe money too. There is loads of recent information on the boards about the prices guys are currently paying at various places. You have a month to read up.

Many guys spend only one or two nights in a place so no reason why not, especially if you want to get the feel of the places for possible longer stays in future.

Does A/C mean "air-conditioned"? If so, why do you want to avoid it? To save money or because, like me, you have a dislike of it? I must admit my opposition has weakened for the first time during the past few days as it is extremely hot and humid and my ceiling and portable fans are working non-stop.

I suggest you start at Blackbeards as it is a safe environment to get the hang of the DR. Then move to Sosúa. Also secure your booking at Blackbeards first as that is just one, busy hotel and they may book up for the dates you need. You can always find somewhere in Sosúa as there are so many options (around 15 to 20 chica-friendly hotels, I guess) even if not your first choice.

If you just need a fuck, but you are not staying at Blackbeards, calling in there is an expensive way to get sex. Where would you be staying locally if not there? Yes, you could stay in Costambar or Plata Puerto but this is not recommended for a very short and first trip. Your holiday would be half over by the time you have found your way around.

Your plan of staying either at Blackbeards or in Sosúa or both is the right one. Stick to that. And if you are staying in Sosúa why would you want to make the long trip to Blackbeards, pay a salida (take-out fee) and have to pay for a room to do the deed, either at Blackbeards, if available, or in a cabaña (a sort of motel room rented for 3 or 4 hours and specifically designed for discreet sexual encounters)? You could just go to Passions and find a chica of equal quality. Expensive, but much cheaper than an expedition to Blackbeards.

Secondly, what do you mean by "knocking on regular doors". Do you mean picking up non-putas? If your whole trip lasts only 4/5 days I can tell you you have [b]nil[/b] chance of succeeding at that, if success means getting in their knickers. If you are young(ish), reasonable looking, speak passable Spanish (and it helps if you have a car and can dance the local dances, merengue, bachata and salsa) you might stand an outside chance of achieving something in another town, but in Sosúa you will meet only working girls because non-putas avoid the place.

If you are not referring to "non-putas" then you don't have to do any "knocking" in Sosúa. Maybe have to fight them off with a broom?

Charles: Being of Indian (Asian variety) origin, I noted your "clean-bowled" which is why the cricket theme. I am aware that you are still recuperating. And I hope everything is going well.

P. S. : I know three kinds of Brits. The Cricket kind (rare these days) , the soccer kind and the rugby kind. .

1. Noted thoughts on BB from both of you. I will hence accord priority to that. I do not like the idea of switching places either but thought just might like to take in the whole panorama. That's all.

2. Air conditioning is something I did not grow up with despite the tropical heat / humidity of my native place, living in Singapore did not like it, living in EU, did not have it and while it is all around my house in New England, I really like the idea of while in Rome do as the Romans.

3. Charles, noted your thoughts on knocking on "regular doors" and the availability (or the lack of it) of such a thing in Sosua etc. Thanks much for the candid response. I have been trying to play "hookie" on a few online sites and so we will see how that pans out. As both of you mentioned, without a lot of time on hand and I am certainly the movie star kind, I have to work hard to get lucky! .

And I'm looking for some feedback on whether to go to BB or Sosua or possibly a combination of the the two. We are pretty much winging it so ANY recommendations would be appreciated. We are thinking about BB first and then Sosua to round out the trip. Please Help! I'm coming to you guys as a humble student of the monger game

You can get non-pros, or perhaps semi-pros; however, it will not be an instant thing like picking BB girls. I did so in the capital. It took me a week, and I told her that I was staying in the capital for a month, then returning to my residence in Puerta Plata. I was cold calling several universities for potential teaching jobs, and explained this to her. I told her where I went, and with whom I met. I met her at her job, asked her a question or two about how she liked the job and other small talk, and we started talking for nearly an hour. Business was slow at the job, so we could talk. I texted her during the week, it was much easier that struggling through our Spanish as she did not speak the King's Spanish. We went to the mall and strolled around, I met her family and had dinner with them, then I told her to come visit me at my apartment. It was work. I did not spend much money, as I only paid for her roundtrip taxi ride. He cab fare was far less than mine, but the locals get better rates. Getting her was work. She spoke no English. She wanted to see me the "second week," but I told her that I had to return to the USA for family reasons. I did, but would have returned in any event. We chat by phone, but I use Skype.

So, it can happen, but regular girls will not simply go with you because you are a foreigner with money, especially if they think you only want some. They get enough of that from the resident brothers. Like with anything, you must have a plan. Now, Charles, Frannie, and others can pull this off, but they reside there. I can do it while on vacation, but it may take the entire week and a story that sticks. Also, I have been to the DR a few times.

He is here only for 4 or 5 days, not a week, and possibly two of those days he will be at Blackbeards. That leaves a maximum of three days in Sosúa (not the capital). Best of luck finding a non-pro in Sosua (of all towns) and wooing her into bed within that period unless he is satisfied with fuglies or middle-age women (over 35 is middle-aged in the DR). By the time he realises he is not getting anywhere his holiday will be over.

I started at BB then hit Sosua for my final 2 nights. Starting at BB is beneficial as to talking to DR chicas and getting a feel. Sosua chicas ARE different but I had a great time in both places! Depending on your nights in Sosua, the clubs may be rocking or dead, but chicas are around even if you have to look for them.

I just returned from a 2 week BB / Sosua visit last Thursday and have already booked me a return trip for Sept. LOL. Love DR!

I always suggest to a newbie to the Northcoast that they visit Sosua instead of BB's. Many guys believe that BB's is a perfect introduction for a newbie, but the problem I see with it is that it is too isolated. If your unfortunate enough to be there at a time with others who don't know their way around, or you aren't comfortable with interacting with strangers easily, you will find yourself stuck at BB's until you leave for Sosua. Some guys say that the BB's setup is perfect for the newbie because it's a "point and click" and "shooting fish in a bowl" type of environment. The problem is that the BB's bowl is really small and your choice of fish is extremely limited.

Additionally, Sosua will give you more area to freely and easily roam when you feel the need to spread your wings, and it has a more usable beach with a much greater choice of places to eat. Also, whenever you do Sosua, make sure you're there on a weekend. The weekdays are generally slower than the weekends, as they are in most places, and you might be left with the opinion that Sosua is slow all the time.

Whatever you do, enjoy.

Whoa! This is truly interesting as we get down to the core. Philosophy of mongering. I see that there are differing views and this is what is stimulating for me.

At a personal level, and based on my experiences in Asia and EU (essentially Germany) , I have two rules:

1. Do not get emotionally involved. I have had situations in which I had to forcibly extricate myself.

2. Do not hurt anyone's feelings.I have walked away on many occasions, when I was not sure if my deal was also the other person's deal.

Needless to say, as all hunters know here, it is much more fun not to fish from a bowl but given the constraints of life, lack of time, the innumerable expectations in a new milieu and the challenges thereof.linguistic and cultural, I am forced to make compromises.

On a practical note, I am now booked on a flight to POP for 7/15 and am angling for BB for the first three nights. Will keep you posted.

Needless to say, I am very thankful for the generosity of all you guys' time!

In that case, skip the dream of a non-pro, and enjoy shooting willing fish in a barrel. :) I did find a semi-pro in Sosua during my last visit, and it was a challenge. :)

I am now confirmed at BB for the nights of 7/15-17. Getting to POP at 2. 00 PM approx. Hopefully, as most of you recommend, it would be a good primer on the ways of DR after which I would move to Sosua. I have not made any bookings there, I am hoping I can just swing by and decide on the spot. If any of you, especially the local oracle, is around during those days. It is a weekend, I would love your company to shoot the breeze. I also owe a round of drinks.

I have been advised by BB that credit cards have very high fees associated. Was wondering, given that BB is apparently in an isolated area, where would my best bet be in terms of cambio. I do not like airports as they offer you measly rates.

By the way, how good is the Costumber beach. Is there life around there at all?

Thanks always. [/QUOTE]Your best bet is bring dollars and change them in Jenny's supermarket, just inside Costambar. There is also a cambio within walking distance from BB. Come out of BB, turn left then right at the end of the road. Just over the brow of the hill, on the right there is a small cambio.

Not much life at the beach these days as it is getting hot. The Catamaran bar at the far end is doing OK. Also a few of the bars on the road side of the beach, so I'm told. I'm sure you will find enough life in BB to keep you happy!
