I don't really shop or eat at Chatuchak, except snacks and the like.

For markets, I prefer local ones like Wang Lang, where the food is amazing and the clothes are cheap, not that I need clothes or care about the cost of anything other than in principle (I'm not paying100 baht for a plate of Pad Krapow Moo when its 30 baht in local areas).

There are so many great local markets it makes sense for even a tourist to experience the real thing, which Chatuchak (and the Train market up in Hwaii Kwang) are not, being geared primarily for tourists.

Jump on the skytrain, get off at Pak Nam, and hit the seafood market. Or grab the SRT train at Talat Plu Market (off the BTS) and head down to Maha Chai.

My advice to every visitor is to see the sights, but head off the beaten path for real fun.

My further advice for longer stay travelers IE 90 days or more is live outside of the tourist districts. Your 35 K baht condo in Asoke is 11 K across the river.

For my upcoming trip I think I'm either going to be in Bang Sue, or Thonburi again.

Can someone update me on whether marijuana is easily available in Thailand right now. The New York Times reported that it was available in numerous locations and easy to buy, but that there is a backlash against pot, and that the law was almost certainly changing. They added that this might happen by January, just as my wingman and I are supposed to visit. I do not smoke marijuana, but he always smuggles some into the country (against my advice! We are both old guys in suits, so we do not look like pot smugglers, but I would like to be able to tell him not to bother this time.

Well I was.

I found a 30 day rate for 25,000 smack dab in the middle of Nana area. Could be my go to Hotel. Checking in today. Was charged a Holiday Fee of extra money but that seems legit.

Fish Talk got me thinking. Buy a Fish at tops, fully cooked, make your own meal. I did last night and was surprised how good it was. McDonald's fries and you got fish and chips. Add vegetables and it's a whole meal.

Red Snapper for high class folks at 125 baht or for you low class Tilapia at 59 baht.
