Not sure if that's a positive endorsement of the Metro, or not. It's by far the best way to get around town. It's been years since they used tokens, but you still need to be able to read the Cyrillic alphabet to navigate it properly. Actually there is some English in the Metro, I noticed the individual line maps posted in the cars have English translations of the station names (as I recall), so that's a big help--assuming you can find your way onto the right train.

Regarding 9-10's, they are not for hire in the way you might be thinking. Make no mistake, they are being compensated for their time but not on a per transaction basis. I was successful on the metro on my first trip. By my third trip I found it easy to navigate. It is really the best way to get around the city but it closes around 01:00 so not the best for going out late at night. It is about $1 USD to go as far as you want to go and you can go to the kiosk and hand them money and show on you hand the number of credits you want if you cannot tell them in Russian. It is pretty important (but not essential) that you at least have a decent understanding of Cyrillic and helpful to know where you are going before you get there. I have an English metro map on my phone. Jake has a great app on his phone that will tell you the best route for a particular destination.

You just need the basic map in your pocket (You will usually have some pockets because you have to wear a coat most of the time there). I think if you have a good working navigation, car is best for night but for daytime don't even aprroach it.

That is the reason why in all business ads, visit carts, and so on usually there is the name of closer metro station. Only residential area outside / outskirts Moscow has no easy access to metro. Moscow governement is almost opening a new station each month.

Mind that indication are in Russian only. Most station have two exit, some more... On ground of lots of railways going via Moscow, you might get out on one side and be in one city part, on the other seems another continent. If you start learning the cyrillic letters it's quite easy and rational, of course intimidatig the firt time. Buy a 10 run card it's around 6/7 euro, and you slip to queue all the times...

Bus tickets are separate as tram ones. In the periferic areas where the metro stations are 3-4 km each othere there is always a minibus that carries you between the stations...

If there are real traffic jams (not present only on Sunday morning)... Travelling by metro and bus you can save hours... From airports (all three are served SVO, DME, VKO) to a point in the City usually it takes no more than 1.15 or 1.30 by car (I did it and nearly lost the plane) it can take even 3 hours... The only problem is the baggage... In the internal corridors and for smaller level differences between lines often there is no escalator...

Ten years ago you could walk down the street and wink at a cute girl and it was 50:50 that she would stop and chat with. Sex for money was just not that big a deal back then. As Moscow's economy has strengthened, so too have standards. I'm sure what you say is very true, that the good old days when just about any woman in Russia would be happy to go with a foreigner for a fistful of cash, or even a Sneekerz bar, are over. The economy in Russia, or at least inside the MKAD, has improved to the extent that a young Russian woman, 9 or 10, has many other options for herself. And that those women who have the necessary assets can parlay them into a very comfortable life.

But I'm also sure that, of the total population of 9's and 10's, there is some percentage who do not want to be "kept", for whatever reason. They want to make their own way and do their own thing, particularly after they have their diplome.
