The one sure thing about rebel behaviour is that many of it's practical expressions are guaranteed to cross over into mainstream society sooner or later. And so it is in Thai culture: The tats, piercings, swearing, smoking, drinking, etc that were once almost exclusively the domain of bargirls are now crossing over slowly-but-insidiously in varying degrees. The early stage of this sees compartmentalising: You only show your new-found personal liberation to people who you are confident won't be offended by it. After all, this is 'bad behaviour'. No offence taken ;) , All the male staff smoke but the women don't, I go out with them fairly often and while the guys drink beer and puff away, girls sip on Ice teas and just gossip.
I have however, as you said, seen a rise of Tatoos among my female staff: Lower back and cleavage are the favourite spots. Piercings are starting and a few even have a pierced tongue (I did not check their Labia).
One of my female staff was shocked last week when I made fun of her tatoo, she was proudly showing it to me (some Roman numbers on her arm). I told her I did not like it and that in France, the only things we Tatoo are cows because we can't bother to remember their names. She was shocked and I doubt she comes to show me anything ever again.

You have to understand that there is a strong cultural connection in Thailand to tattooing and it really has nothing much to do with social status. Thais from all walks of life get tattoos.
Lots of my very HiSo students have tattoos and my Gig has two - one at the base of the back of her neck and one on her right shoulder. Both are Buddhist tattoos and have deep religious significance, particularly to do with protection. They're called Saak Yant in Thai. The guy that did her tattoos is Ajarn Noo, the same guy who did Angelina Jolie. The girl in the first photo (Ajarn-noo1) has a similar tattoo to my Gig, but on her left shoulder.
To make insensitive remarks about tattoos is a direct slap in the face of Thai culture, so deep-rooted is the tradition. The remark you made to your staff member was highly insulting because I suspect that her tattoo was Saak Yant and probably had to do with 'luck'.

Its not exclusive. So no point saying you have fucked a starfish with a tattoo, or a **** without a tattoo, I am talking trends. And the trend I find is that girls with tattoo's, by a ratio of around 5 to 1, will be into anal sex against non-tattoo.
Thai tradition for women is white and pure skin. Not covered in tattoo's, so they have to be a bit "rebellious" in the first place to go against the culture and get a tattoo.
How many adverts on TV do you see with women with white and pure skin? And how many with women with tattoo's?

I don't know what you do. But, just because you've been here for 20 years doesn't automatically make you an expert on all things Thai, unless you actively do research on the culture.
Do you know anything at all about Thai history? I have researched and continue to do research on all aspects of Thai culture past and present.
I teach aspects of Thai history and culture at university and happen to have given a lecture on this very topic last week.
So, FYI...Tattoos on both men and women go all the way back to Sukhothai in the 14th century. Several female members of Thai royalty and aristocracy have had and continue to have tattoos.
For example, I work with a 30+ professor who is a 'Mom Rajawong' and has a small Buddhist tattoo on her right shoulder. She also told me she has another small one between her shoulder blades just below her neck. I hardly think that a woman, who is of royal blood and working in a prestigious university is rebelling against the culture or her parents.
Often, the tattoos possessed by HiSo women are not visible: the favourite location is the upper back, at the base of the neck or on the right shoulder. They don't generally tattoo legs, arms, stomach, breasts or lower back.
The other significant fact is that because monks cannot touch women, the tattoos can only be done by a lay or ex-monk, such as Ajarn Noo, who was a revered monk, who left the temple, but who is still considered to possess magical powers, and highly sought after by many HiSo Thais for a variety of spritual matters. He is a well-known celebrity and still viewed and respected as a holy man.
I personally have spent several hours with Ajarn Noo. My Gig has 2 tattoos done by him. I was interested in meeting him because at one point, I was going to make a TV documentary about him. One afternoon, several over-30 ++ and quite wealthy women came to make merit, receive amulets, tattoos (both ink and the 'invisible' sesame oil type). One Thai-Chinese businesswoman, with 2 Buddhist tattoos: one at the base of her neck, and another below that, handed him a large stack of 1,000 baht notes.
You can argue with me about politics because that's largely opinion and you're entitled to yours.
But, if you're going to go up against me about Thai culture, you had better know what the hell you're talking about. I would guess in this regard, I might possibly know considerably more than you do, unless you've done considerable research and written scholarly papers on the subject, which somehow, I doubt.
