Thanks for that El Culion. It is a god place with 24/7 Internet access and cheap phones. It has cheap aircon rooms and is a good deal. Not for me though as it is just a little too far on foot from my stomping ground. There is a Dutch gaffe almost beside it, with shit food, but good deals on hiring boats. The Flying Dutchman I think. The gaffer there should get his gut down and cut down on the coffin nails.
Soi Buakhaw has lots of bargains and the slappers like the market near Winner. Good cheap, trashy clothes on sale. Not a place to be drunk late at night as you would be an easy mark for guys on motorbikes.
Soi Buakhaw has possibilities all right.
Cheers
Hi all,
I am heading to Thailand for the first time as a tourist this coming November. I decided it might be best to head strait to Pattaya. And now for the questions. I saw some decent reviews for the Queen Victoria Inn on a review site. But the reviews are pretty spaced out over the last 5 years. It has great prices at about 700 baht and looks nice. But here's the thing its on Soi 6 and after looking at maps it seems a bit far from Walking Street (But pretty close to the Sabai massage parlors and some beerbars:)). I'm guessing it's not going to be a fun walk at 30+ minutes. How is the transportation there? I'm sure I can get a baht bus to walking street and such, but how do I get back with guest? Do the girls mind taking the baht bus back (or can they), how late do they operate btw. Are there more conventional taxis and of course are they affordable? I'm sure if I was more sappy I would try and pass the walk back off as a romantic stroll down the beech but I would end up sweating way too much and for the wrong reason. I like the looks of the Queen Victoria, but it's location has me worried. I found another place that is closer but their website is down or non-existent Sunview Place. Any help/advice would be much appreciated guys.
Thanks in advance,
Mojoke

The baht buses run late and are cheap - 10 baht per head for farangs. After all the Walking Street bars close, the buses are still running. I don't know if they run all night, but they are running past 1 AM. Usually by that time, I'm ready to get back to the hotel and get busy!:D Most people take their BG's back to their hotel on the baht buses. The girls expect to go to your hotel via the buses, unless they have a motorbike of their own. I always stay in North Pattaya (quieter) - much farther away than Soi 6 and I always use the baht buses - to and from. I wouldn't walk to Soi 6 to save 20 baht. Taxis are less plentiful than baht buses.

There are tons of hotels on 2nd street, beach road, walking street, all over
Pattaya, wherever you want to stay!
Some are decent places, others stink. Donīt worry, there are affordable
hotels in ....land, Pattaya!

When I was in Pattaya the first night, the bar girl I was with had me pay 40 baht for the bus, 20 for her and 20 for me I guessed. I thought that was the going rate so I paid 20 baht every ride for about a week or two, several dozens of rides. Somehow I learned that 10 baht for farangs was actually correct and started to pay that. Even at 20 baht a ride it still seemed like a good deal. Oh well, I guess that is one of the prices one pays for ignorance.

It's quite common for guys to take their TGs on the baht bus. I've seen it plenty of times going from Pattaya to Jomtien. Not sure what time they run to but I've caught one back from the far end of Jomtien Beach after 2am.

A few times, the girl I was with, paid 15 baht for us. Most of the time you pay 20 for both of you. Thais pay 5 baht when not riding with a farang. It's a good deal. In Phuket, they charge around 100 baht for the same distance ride.

I found this very strange as all locals know that the going rate is 5b for themselves and 10b for all visitors. I guess your gal is either new in town and dont know the rate or she knows the driver.
BTW: if you know how to speak Thai, you pay 5b also.

Hard to believe that this much bandwidth is being wasted over paying 5 baht too much for a bus ride.

Actually, its over a whopping 20b as Horatio paid 40b instead of the normal 20b for 2 people. You know that most of us mongers cant sleep nites knowing another fellow monger got cheated paying double the cost (.50 cents)--ha ha
Peace all

Will be heading to Thailand in February, first time. What are my up scale choices for a hotel that is girl friendly? I've got about 3000 Baht / night to budget for hotels. Any help at all would be appreciated, would prefer somewhere closer to the action or easy to get to / from.
So as you discuss food and bandwidth, I'd like to bring it back to hotels. Most of the "don't worry" posts were written over the summer. Many of the hotels are now fully booked (I tried both direct e-mail and through a couple of the internet sites).
After a few visits to both bkk and chiang mai, this forum got me looking at Pattaya (does that make me a patnewbie?). I hope to spend a week or so. Looking for both the nightlight but don't want to stay in the middle of it (would like some quiet). Clean space. A pool (sauna?) would be nice. Within walking distance to the MPs. I don't mind walking 10-15 minutes to get to town. If I could keep it in the 1,000 bht range, that would be good.
Thank you all your forthcoming suggestions, really.
Fersure
Fersure - look, you want "upscale" or just "clean"? For "clean" relatively nice, sort of "cheap" go try one of the Sawasdee hotel chain sawasdee.com I think - maybe 600B /night or a bit more. The only 1 with a pool is Siam (corner of Buakhao and Honey Inn and reports have it that the pool isn't too nice). Eastiny residence is good - look for reports in here (bit more money) 15 min walk to Walking Street, lots of action on Buakhao. Why walk - get on 2nd road and the baht bus will take you all the way to North road for the princely sum of 10B (of course, if you are a masochist like me, I GO to Thailand because I WANT to walk
dare I say RTFF (it's not a stretch to read the hotels portion)
