one friend of mine has his wife in Santa Marta and he has just told me in this days every town on the coast is very very dangerous.
He has just told me many incredible stories.
Now there are many many paramilitares and these towns now are the most dangerous in Colombia. Santa Marta was a pleasant town till some days ago but now is the most dangerous town in Colombia. I think it is better to avoid these towns now. Do you know something too?

Santa Marta and Baranquilla are just like any large city, good areas and bad areas, BUT THE MOST DANGEROUS CITY IN COLOMBIA IS BUENAVENTURA by far.

My friend have just told me the recent demobilizations in mass of the paramilitary groups workig in the zone, attracted by the possibility to be pardoned by a special and complaisant legislation 'to hoc', they have just filled cities of the coast of an elevated number of small criminals with the tendency to the rapids association turning to illegitimate finality. In this time these towns become more violent. The situation of Saint Marta and other towns on the coast become distorted in a little time.
Santa Marta has alwyays been a paramilitary town, controlled by the paramilitary. 99.9% of the people that live in Santa Marta are themselves, have relatives, have friends of relatives, have friends, or know personally many many paramilitaries. Does that make Santa Marta dangerous? It can, but it also makes it safe from the FARC. I have not read about more and more Paramilitaries moving from the hills into the city, but certainly it could be happening. It doesn't change much. For the most part all the high level paramilitaries stay in their houses in the countryside coming to Santa Marta when necessary. They still control the whole city, the police, and many of the businesses... so if you are scared of Paramilitaries then it was dangerous before these last few days as well. If you are not scared of Paramilitaries then I'm not sure how this changes anything.

If a town is controlled by the paramilitary, you as an American or Westerner are probably fine or perhaps even safer than in other towns. I have been to paraco towns where I was told I could leave my car doors unlocked with my wallet sitting on the seat and nothing would happen. Why? Because the paras exact extreme justice on thieves.
A town full of ex-paramilitary thugish underlings earning a monthly pittance from the government with no one controlling them is a different matter entirely.

One guys opinion only.
Barranquilla has just as many nice non-pros ... very easy to approach ... just as hot and nice and cheerfull ... definitely is hotter than Cali (temperature).
Cali has more little daytime massage casas, Barranquilla I would give the edge on non-pros.

Please don't ask to compare the chicas of Periera and Armenia or Medellin and Bucaramanga etc. next week. Just get a map of Colombia, close your eyes and point... and that is where you start. If you don't like it after a few days, plane flights are cheap. I'm not trying to be rude. But no one here can give you the answers you want. We are all wired differently and different people have different tastes.
Ok Poturu, I am editing this because I just went back and re-read your posts... it sounds like HEAT is not your thing if you thought Santa MArta was too hot. Barranquilla is much hotter than Santa Marta and I have been to Cali when it felt hotter than Barranquilla and also when it was quite comfortable to me... about the same (a little hotter) than Santa Marta. Thus my honest opinion is you should pass on both. If you want to stay away from the heat, Bogota is the place for you . Even Pereira and MEdellin will probably be too hot for you. Ok buddy.
