man i never thought the backlash would be this severe against filipinos. they are not that bad. s*hit happens in third world countries. i would forever be wary of hong kongers. no hanky panky business with any chinese to hong kong folks
not at all. the filipinos always have a habit of stoking the fire. and then wonder why others are mad at them.
i safe bet. 99% of filipinos sort of justify the killing, and more than 50% demand that the hostage taker deserves a state funeral (trust me. i am not kidding)
and majority again compare china's human rights record and also persistently quote the case of a mad man in china who killed two filipinos (mistaking the filipinos for japanese) and since china didn't come crawling for the odd attack on tourists (mind you. it wasn't a hostage situation. it was a random attack by a deranged guy. who ended up being sentanced to death and was put to death by china)
so there you go. try striking some sense into the filipinos as to they royally screwed it up.
i don't blame the hk people. who would see the comedy unfolding? and more than enough filipinos have taken it on donald "bow tie" tsang for his attempts to reach noynoy. apparently protocol says he is the equivalent of mayor lim. so he over stepped his authority trying to reach the president. now, if you hear the cm of maharashtra trying to call the philippine president for a hostage situation involving indians, and the filipinos calmly say to the cm to call the manila mayor as he is the equivalent of manila mayor. you think indians will take such a comment in stride?
and hong kongers, while they may have overstepped their authority. and whatever, have a long relationship with filipinos. including the famous words of a hk personality who called filipinos as a "nation of servants" and probably the filipinos decided it was payback time and let them rot.
in mumbai, it was a large scale attack and everything was in disarray. here. it was one man, who gave more than enough chance to be taken out.
to add to everything: a filipino friend of mine. of the type with more moral fiber told me that the hostage taker would have planned in a deadly ending, as firstly, he will be a martyr, secondly, he will get burial in full uniform and maybe a flag draped across (he got that didn't he?. and the reply from rp was rp is a democratic country and if people drape the flag over the coffin. too bad..) and if not to add insult to the injury, my friend swears that the cop won in the end: enough of filipinos would donate money to the family and whatever he had lost in terms of his retirement benefits. his family would make more than that
go figure that out
ps: as for mayor lim steering clear of foreigners? no. i don't think so. for rp. foreigners are source of income and that will continue. they may slow down but a cop early 6, 000 peso a month will be always more than tempted to take some more from a silly foreigner if the opportunity presented itself.

Answer. Apart from the hostage taker, it was just one kid who was hit by a stray bullet: not even the rescuing cops were hit. Now one could only surmise that either the Filipino cops were super protected or. They hostages were killed by the rescuers. In an emotionally charged state. Many answers can be extracted from this simple statistic.
Anyone stayed at the City State Hotel on Mabini st. Just wondering if the price is good and if it's a GF hotel.
Thanks,
FZ
I don't like the place, the room is small, sub-par. Nearby is also the Lotus Garden and City-State, about the same price ($45) for the low-end rooms, slightly nicer.
Great find, Socker! It does not transpire through the link you provide but it does through this one:
http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=606521&publicationSubCategoryId=63
Now why am I not surprised?
Yea, the link I tried to post had the info on Lim, somehow I messed it up a little, thanks for the help. I hope Lim loses his job and things loosen up again for you guys. My first trip to PI is coming up Nov. 1st, going to AC and Cebu. From what I've read about Manila, I will skip it this time. All The Best!
They better not mess with Manila bay or any other touristy places....lots of Asian's visits LA cafe...the last thing Lim would want is get involved in another fiasco................
The number of "tourists" who visit LAC (now MBC) is a tiny blip on the radar StarChild.
These small-scale low-budget "tourists" are absolutely nothing in the computation of overall figures.
It is the large 5-star hotel convention and "company training" figures that they are interested in.
Did you know that most of the 5-star hotels in Makati (Shang, Peninsula, Oriental) and Oakwood Premier in Ortigas are running at almost 80% occupation rates at present with big-paying company accounts filling the rooms.
That is why nobody in authority cares much about what happens in Burgos or EDSA or even MBC. The peanuts spent by mongers don't count when you realise that there are some guys who spend 100 - 200,000 php PER NIGHT in selected establishments, and I dont mean the casinos either.
It is another reason why the high-end escort agencies seem to charge such high prices for one -off bookings. They have enough punters who pay these charges. I have a friend who has a "high-end" escort girl as a gf - she expects and gets upwards of 50,000 per night from some of these guys in tips, and sometimes 2 or 3 times each week. Two weeks ago a punter took her to Singapore for a week and apart from the 1st class travel etc she pocketed a cool 5000 USD tip.
So let's not get too carried away that the Philippines is dependent on mongers visiting. Believe me, it's not.

You are right, my perspective always gets clouded by comparing it with India which is as corrupt as PH

Thanks,
FZ
Many times FZ. Yes the price is good value. Is it GF? I've had as many as 4 (four) girls stay the night with me there (at once). The doorman there has a smile that gets broader & broader every time I go there I swear hehehe ;)
Just book a double occupancy & no questions will be asked about your companion (even if its not the same one all night). If you are going to have more than one extra body with you overnight (as in two girls at once, three girls at once or more) then do the right thing, inform reception & pay the modest fee.
This hotel has a wide asian clientelle including farangs with their honeyko's/wives so act with decorum in the public areas & you will have zero problems.
City state is normally near 100% occupancy all year round, book ahead.

The standard room actually look large and clean and new.
BTW, is there another City-State hotel nearby?
I'll check out the lotus Garden in the meantime.
Thanks

Just to test the waters, and she said she can refer her friends and they will cost 15, 000 per night. I was wondering which planet this woman fell out from, when she said the girls normally charge 30, 000 per night.
I did go, meet her in her own environs and went out partying, and she and her friends too me to Tabu, for a group of 12, there was one Martell, one Blue Label, and one Bacardi. And when they left, they didn't bother to bank in the balance, and they didn't ask me to chip in, and I got the point.
There was a couple of guys hitting on the girls, and one of the girl whisphered that they guys whole worth is less than her hand bag.
Well, not everybody heading to Manila is cheap. And as you say, most of the 5 star hotels are booked at 80% or so. Regardless whether Mr Lim stays, or fucks poor tourists, or there is another Lunetta Drama.

There are no crowd control people are only 50 yd away from the bus ,they should be 100 yd away and after the gunman is killed ,there are people all around the bus .
I read today DOT of philippine will lose about 70 million from touristism ,only about 140,000 Hong kong tourist visit PI last yr but they don't realise tourist from all around the world might not come to PI now because of this ,lucky they didn't take a Korean tour bus hostage or that will really hurt them.

Arrived from the ASEAN mainland into the PI early yesterday morning, for a bit of shopping and (a lot of) fun. Main purpose is to check out CEB, as I have not been there before. Made a mental note to try at least 1 place on my 'Misses' list in MNL from the last trip:
Cafe Havana, Harrison Plaza for mall pickups, Bautista *****houses, Quezon City Clubs.
Mall Pickups - Robinsons Malate
3 pm on a Thursday afternoon and in a span of a coffee, I counted at least 6-7 girls (1 or 2 a little scruffy) walking circles around the entrance, driveway and fountain out front. Number includes at least 1 or 2 baklas (TVs/she-males). Starbucks was buzzing, with no tables available outside. There was definite talent around here. Walking around inside the mall yielded less promising results, but then again I had *real* shopping to do!
Is it me or does there seem to be less Asian tourists these days because of the Mendoza incident? Reminder to self: avoid buses and disgruntled (and armed!) government employees. :D Interesting if not a little disconcerting to also note that related news to the incident is still making headlines in the Philippines Star and on RPN News. Yesterday's issue of the Star featured somebody innocuously named 'Rose'... who apparently gave Mendoza a lift to the Police Barracks where he got armed.
Cafe Havana
One look at this place this wet night at about 9 pm and I knew it was not my scene. Me: over-aged raver (mid-late 30s) and Asian expat from an ASEAN country living in a 3rd ASEAN country.
There was a table of older FLs sitting outside at Starbucks next door actively scoping the foreign men (mostly caucasian) arriving in groups or already with their dates. None I would care for. Some of the girls quite 'country', looking totally out of place at a Mall such as Greenbelt. Lone causasian gent (looked to be in his 60s) in jean shorts quietly nursing a beer at one of the tables outside. 2 big white guys with their posse of Pinays. A group of guys making the rounds, one wearing a polo shirt that said 'US Embassy, Manila, Philippines' on it. Small groups of (older) MILF-type Pinay talent at a table here and there. Nah. Did a couple of walk-pasts but did not care to stay for even a drink.
Manila Bay Cafe, aka the now-defunct LA Cafe
Due to the recent closure, this place is a pale shade of its former self. Walked in late last night, the downstairs bar was quite full, but the numbers seem to be about half of what they used to be. Went upstairs, the cover charge was quickly 'waived'. No bands playing as they have left for greener, more stable pastures. Band area practically empty. Korean contingent in the section by the long bar was still just that, only several tables occupied. Both pool tables were being used.
Stayed for a drink and left for EDSA Complex, where I pulled a sweetie at about 3 am for the usual PHP1600 BF. Gave her a PHP2500 'tip' as she left at about 11 am.
...Off to Cebu! Stayed tuned...

Has anyone been to this bar.
Kyu Son Maru or 930.
It is a japanese bar in Malate. The lovely miss C tells me she works there as a waitress.
She says it is not exclusively Japanese, other foreigners go there.
The management only hire girls who are slim, pretty, with a decent rack. No flat chested.
I am interested in any Field Report which you can provide.
