OK, so even though you have a tertiary education, your spelling, gammar and syntax aint perfect, neither is mine. The structure of Thai is different to English.

(OTH please interject, correct, flame me) In Thailand, the govt provides free education until the child is about 12 years old. Then the family have to pay a fee, which may not sound like much, but it can be for many families. So what happens is that the family prioritize and send the boys to school. The girls stay and work on the farm speaking Thai or local dialect until they get to a point where they want to explore and head to a bigger center. They arrive in the city (you can sit at a cafe and watch them get off the bus, if you like) with good farming skills - not much use - and little formal training in English. They get menial jobs that pay poorly and have trouble meeting costs.

As a result they head to Nana carpark or the BG and get to meet upright men like you and I. To do commerce they learn English but often just from queue cards and the guys they meet. Men that can speak Thai have a great time since there are a pool of lovelies out there that go untapped.

I have had experience with girls that I try to see each time I come to LOS, where they show up and stumble over English because they have been home or they are doing a course to get skills and have limited Farang contact.

So my friend, you will find gals that fit the bill for you, you just have to talk with them for a while. Its not such a bad thing to encourage them to develop other skills, including English. I have paid for course fees for a couple of girls - if you do this be really careful - scams abound and you need to make sure money goes to course. Some of the FLs are very smart, others are not but are willing to work hard to make a life, I admire that.

You are not a tight-wad. Hopefully when you go, you will leave something behind (not a baby) and maintain contact and encouragement with select girls who are not money and blood suckers. Alternatively you can donate to the Gates Foundation or similar.

Whilst I genuinely do respect your well meaning thoughts, I must point out there are Thai Bar girls and non Thai bar girls in Thailand.

99.9% of the readers here will only ever hang out with the Thai bar girls and believe me, they are treated as the low of the lowest (not generally by the likes of us by the way) but generally by Thai society and they have their reasons to.

Being a prostitute (no matter what the guise) is in fact a big taboo in Thailand and if you do speak and understand the Thai language with all the dialectics and hidden subtleties you will soon learn two things:

1 How crude your average Thai bar girl is in the way she speaks and lack of culture.
2 How most Thai people from the police to shop assistants, and even the girl in Mcdonalds earning 200 baht a day for a 12 hour shift addresses this lowest of the low while smiling at the same time.

You may or may not know but when Thais smile or laugh it doesn't necessarily mean they are being friendly or showing warmth towards us when we are walking hand in hand with our new found bar girl girlfriends whether browsing in a shopping center or strolling past hotel reception prior to having a good session upstairs.

How must the average shop assistant working 12 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week feel when someone perceived as being crude and uneducated, dirty and uncouth because she is a prostitute with no respect for herself or family not only flaunts her expensive mobile phone but can be paid twice in a day (cash in hand and tax free) what that shop assistant or even a bank clerk or senior hotel receptionist earns in a month.

All foreigners or farangs in Thailand are labelled as sex tourists and without even knowing it we too are treated with that same disdain and how our own ears would burn if we spoke and understood the language.

Still, it's very hypocritical of them in that respect as Thais also visit Thai brothels but the big difference between them and us is that they don't go for the gf girlfriend experience afterwards.

There's some things we really don't want to know as most of us have a great time in the land of smiles.

BTW, Central Thais refer to Isaan people, especially from Buriram and Surin as "Na ling" or "monkey face" because of the high cheekbones, flat, squat noses, big foreheads and dark skin. Now, THAT's racism!

The Thai education system is one of the worst in the world. Thais don't learn. They memorize, then forget. They have no interest in learning anything. They have no interest in education for education's sake. Even if you happen to meet one who is supposedly educated and can speak perfect English, the conversation is still going to likely be somewhat bland and un-inspiring.

Thai English teachers can't carry on a conversation in English (they know all the grammar rules, though). So, how do you expect Thais who've studied English in Thai schools to speak the lingo?

English schools abound in this country because in fact, Thais never quite learn to speak the language properly, even after years of study. Most have no real drive to learn the language, but go through the motions because they think they should. Language schools bank on them dropping out, coming back and dropping out again.

One of the root causes of this lack of interest in anything of substance is that most Thais are quite content to remain in their little back-water of a country, speak Thai only, eat Thai food, only, watch appalling Thai TV, only and happily remain ignorant of the rest of the world.


BTW, even if you can speak Thai and Isaan, the conversations aren't going to be any more interesting. They still talk about "weather hot", "tomorrow hotter", and, of course eating - one of the major topics of Thai conversation.

I remember reading a while back on this forum about a restaurant where working girls will serve you dinner and service you at the same time. Does this ring any bells for anyone? Worth trying?

Hey, guttural [i]paasa Isaan[/i] is like most regional ethnic languages, that is, it is used by lower class poor people to communicate their basic ideas. They really don't have much need to be articulate. Normally GFE refers to a hooker making your sexual experience either equivalent to or better than what you would expect from a real girlfriend.
I get much much better from Thai P4P than what my ex-wife could ever deliver, so its a bit hard for me to understand how good a real GF can be expected to be.

I very much respect your scope on this. Many Western teaching styles were learn by rote not too long ago. Thais are very into their own culture even to the point of it being fatuous. However, they still have things to teach us beyond the third Buddhist precept. The balance even a BG has between sa-nook (fun) and gì-rí-yaa maa-rá-yâat (decorum) is fascinating.

Some rural folks are simple while others drink in the world. Most people from Isaan are straightforward and intrinsically nice - with rare but major exceptions.

Interesting discussion on this thread. Even if I didn't agree, I learnt some things. Hopefully I can remember as well.

If you substitute "anywhere in the provinces" for "Isaan" and "execrable English for guttural ungrammatical Thai, you could just as easily be talking about the Philippines. Actually, rote learning, as it occurs in Thailand has not been seen in the West since at least the 1950s and probably earlier. It's not just rote learning here that is the problem, but the absolute dictatorial, omnipotent nature of largely, under-educated, ignorant Thai teachers, who impart large amounts of useless and/or erroneous information and will not tolerate students' questions. They expect blind obedience. Curious students who dare to question are disciplined, often through physical violence.

Thais are so "into their own culture", the importance of which has been exaggerated through institutionalized brain-washing, that they've developed a disproportionate and arrogant view of their own importance, not only within the region, but within the world. The result of their disinterest in anything outside their own country is that they are among the most ignorant people I've ever met. Your average Thai university student is no better than an 8th grader in the US (and, that might be generous).

Nobody's arguing that many of the simple folk upcountry are nice. And, perhaps there's some charm in their straightforwardness. But, personally as a teacher, I find the lack of interest in knowledge, the lack of a literary tradition or interest in developing one, and an overall lack of interest beyond the scope of their own experience quite appalling.

While for the moment, Thailand may see itself as the regional hub, and may in fact be the regional hub, in the not-to-distant future, unless they change their attitude, they will become an also-ran.
