Nothing Unique about Thailand
I can empathize with OTH's point of view, and I've met several foreigners here in the Philippines who feel exactly the same way, which is easy to do, given the patent insincerity hiding under the guide of friendly smiles. I guess that one of the huge differences between actually living day to day in a country and going there on holiday. During vacation, you can afford to be blind to the reality and you might not even be there long enough to notice or experience the reality. Living long term in a country however, you cannot avoid it.
I've adopted the stance of enjoying the lifestyle that I can maintain here, enjoying the fringe benefits, and attaching no importance to the rest of it. I assume that most people are lying to me, acknowledge that I will never be able to change anything, and just get on with living my life in the best way (for me) that I can.
I'll be in Bangkok in a couple of weeks, and I'll make a special effort not to notice all of the things that OTH so accurately points out.

Yes, Old Thai Hand, you are not alone
If that's true, then I apologize. I actually like your posts and pics on the Phil section. I try now not to be personal, but stick only to agreeing or disagreeing about comments and issues.
BTW, you mentioned before about my leaving ISG. In fact, I left for about 5 months and now only post in fits and starts about specific topics. I'm nowhere near my previous level of posting a year ago where I would post every day and often more than once. I just don't have the interest, but occasionally like to comment on certain things like politics and life here.
The hate-on...
I'm probably the most extreme and certainly the most outspoken in my negativity about Thais. But, if you've noticed, the line in the sand on ISG, divides the expats who live and most importantly work with or have some sort of business dealings with Thais, and those who are happy visiting mongers, who know nothing about the real face of the people. There are lots of others, like me who make negative comments about Thais; just not as nasty or blatant. Nevertheless, I'm sure they often feel as strongly as I. They just don't express it. You should read the Thai Visa forum some time. Talk about an over-the-top whinge-fest.
I used to love it here and love the people. But, after being fucked over, one-too-many times, through no fault of my own, it's hard to feel anything but contempt for what are in essence a morally-bankrupt people who act dishonestly without remorse or concern for the consequences. This kind of behaviour exists proportionately, from the highest HiSo scumbag to the lowliest LoSo, country bumpkin. The only thing worse is that they're often even more despicable to their fellow Thais than even to Farang.
Ar
Old thai hand is right. I have the same sentiment. And I know many over farang leaving here have the same. Its a hate and love situation. I know many friend or farang leaving same me today 50% home europe 50% in Thailand. And all of them enjoy again this situation getting in touch with the normality here in europe. Yes many do not express throut forum or writing. Someting just because they can not writ up stories.

Sun. Fun. Sex. We have to accept it and I see no way how we can change theier attitute. See est la vie. Or. This is Thailand
