you can give policia nacional 100 pesos and they are happy. amet are mafiosos.
amet and pn have checkpoints everyday on avenida maximo gomez south of 27 de febrero. i watched the checkpoint today by the pn, they hardly stopped anyone, i know if i drove by, i would be told to stop.
two pn on a motorcycle, the other night tried to get me to stop on avenida maximo gomez, i just kept driving and entered the parking lot for the barcelo hotel and they didn't follow me into the parking lot.
lots of cars, trucks, motorcycles driving with no lights or broken lights, they never seemed to get stopped. amet detained me for over 2 hours the other day, later that same day i came upon an accident that just happened, young guy laying dead in the street, hit my a truck, while he was operating a motorcycle. maybe if the six amet officers who broke my balls for nothing for over two hours were actually enforcing laws that make the roads safer (ie: helmet laws, vehicle inspections for brakes and lights,) maybe that young guy would still be alive.
driving while gringo. i get stopped every trip but have gotten used to it. it's always the policia nacional (pn) and usually two of them on a moto. amet has never harassed me. the thing to remember with the pn is that they have no legal authority to issue tickets or fines.
i'm patient and it's always the same choreography. show them your driver's license and the car's registration. i argue with them about whatever violation they say i committed. they insist, i deny. you ran the red, no i didn't. you were speeding, no i wasn't.
finally, we get to the fine, you have to pay xxx pesos. i always tell them, ok, let's go to the police station to pay. no, you can pay me here and save the trip. no, i want to go to your police station. after more back and forth, they will finally give up and go away. usually lasts no more than 5-10 minutes.
one night, i was taking an amiga home when they stopped us. i had a glass of baileys with me and we had both been drinking. unfortunately, she is a defense lawyer and lit into them which pissed them off and this went on for over a half an hour before they gave up. after dropping her off, i pulled an illegal u-turn on 27 de febrero on my way home and got stopped again. when the pn came to my door, i showed him the registration and my license, which were still sitting out and told him i had just got stopped. he laughed and said ok, no more you-turns and vaya con dios.
last trip, they stopped me on gomez and found that the registration had the wrong plate number. i told them, it was a rental, not my problem, they could take it tyhe car if they wanted it. when they insisted, i called the emergency number for the rental car company and put them on the line with the pn. the cop had no idea what to do and, after a minute or two, hung up on them, gave me my docs and left.
